CHAPTER 23: JACOB

I flexed my shoulders. I can’t believe this.

 My wings are really gone.

“I don’t care,” I kept thinking to myself. “Its just wings.”

“Lexi!” I heard someone call from behind.

“Oh, hey Jacob.” I tried to put on a smile.

He hugged me, which made me feel uncomfortable. I pushed him away.

“Whoa!” he exclaimed. “Your wings,”

I pressed my lips together. “Yeah,” I said. “Don’t ask.”

“Wasn’t gonna,” Jacob said.

I smiled.

“So, you were gone…I was worried about you,” he began.

He reached for my hair to pet it but I avoided his arm.

“Um yeah,” I stammered.

“What’s the matter? Didn’t you miss me?” he asked.

He’s my boyfriend.

Well, he was the angel I liked before I met Griffin. It’s complicated.

I nodded my head, “Um yeah.”

He wrapped his arm around me and pulled me close to him.

“I’m glad you’re back,” he whispered.

“Same,” I said. “I guess.”

“You guess?” he asked.

He took my cheeks and he rested it on his chest.

“Jacob,” I tried to pull him away.

I didn’t like his warm body against mine.

It felt like hell. I was so fond of Griffin’s cold body next to mine that I forgot what the world actually felt like.

His grip got tighter.

“Jacob,” I said trying to catch my breath. “L-let go.”

“What’s the matter, Lexi?” he asked, ice forming on his wings.

“I can’t do this anymore,” I began. “I’m sorry.”

He took a step back.

“You and me.” I said. “Let’s not do it anymore.”

Jacob crossed his arms, more ice forming on his wings…waiting for an explanation.

“There’s…there’s someone else,” I explained.

He raised his arm, “Stop.”

I looked down. His feet were starting to turn to ice.

He shook his head and pushed me away as he slowly flew away above me.

I can see tears coming down from his eyes and I felt sorry for him.
