(MARSHALL'S POV)
Gasp.
"Marshall's waking up!" was all I heard before I could even take in my surroundings. That was Fionna's voice. My vision was adjusting, the black blear slowly fading from the sides of my eyes.
Pastel walls. Was I in the candy hospital?
The sound of footsteps shuffling towards my bed clattered, and I looked to the direction of the noise. Bubblegum walked to the left side of the bed where Fionna was. That was when I noticed that I was hooked up to an IV on the back of my left hand.
"How are you feeling?" Bubblegum asked. "Why am I here? What happened?" I answered her question with another. "Finn and Jake saw you on their roof, passed out," she answered briefly.
"How long have I been here?"
"Two days," she answered. Wait, two days? I opened my mouth to ask, but she cut me off before I could even make a sound.
"Marshall, what have you been eating?" She asked. "Reds? Nothing else, really," I answered as I slowly propped myself with my elbow to sit up. "And where? Do you eat outside your house? Restaurants? Eateries?" She continued.
"No. I buy food and eat them at home. Why? What's going on?" I asked, getting impatient. Bubblegum sighed. "You've been poisoned. It might have been an accident or whatever and made you really sick, but we can't just disregard that. Because you're a vampire, plus a demon, I think it would have only lasted for a few hours, heck, maybe even just a few minutes," she explained. I barely caught up.
"So?" I cued for her to continue when she stopped talking. She looked to her right, to the direction of the entrance to my hospital room, then to her other side to look at Fionna. "Fionna, could you close the door, please?" She asked. Fionna nodded and walked to the door. Bubblegum waited for Fionna to close it. As the latch bolt sounded, she looked at me and continued.
"It might have been done repeatedly, and maybe for a long time already to result to this. Someone might have done this on purpose. You were slowly dying, Marshall. We thought this might have something to do with those guys you were talking about..."
I didn't know what to say, it was possible. I mean, who else would want to kill me? And the thought that they almost killed me without me even noticing, that they've possibly sneaked into my home or poison my food... what else could they do to Marcy? I felt my ear twitch.
"... have you invited anyone to your house? Or did you have unexpected or unfamiliar visitors? Or did you notice any noise-"
"I have to go see Marceline," I cut Bonnie's queries. "What?" She questioned. "Marshall, you just woke up," Fionna differed, sardonic. "No this is urgent, I need to see her," I ignored and pulled the blanket to my side. I was wearing some light blue patient pajamas. "Marshall, don't be ridiculous..." she blurted as I looked at the half-empty bag of fluid and traced the tube with my eyes until it reached my hand. "You just pulled out from your two-day coma, at least stay for a while so I can give you a check up."
I pulled off the tapes attached to the back of my hand and pulled the needle out of my skin. I tossed it aside and stood up from the other side of the bed. As Bubblegum and Fionna continued to hold me off with their words, I looked outside the window. The sun was setting, just in time.
"I have to go," I bid without listening to them and flew to Marcy's place. I should be able to remember the way to the house. I flew below the canopy of leaves, my skin was reacting a bit to the gaps of afternoon sunlight, only to heal seconds after.
Finally, I arrived to that familiar place. It was awfully silent. I flew to the back of the house and peeked through that window that faces their bed.
My heart dropped at the sight.
Marceline was tied to the bed, her wrists and ankles hooked in chains. She was gagged and blindfolded. I mindlessly opened the window as soon as I saw her, but it seemed like no one else was around, not that it was my biggest concern.
"Marceline!" I called as I pushed the window open and zoomed in and to her side. "M-marshall?" She whimpered and pulled her hand a bit, making the chains clink as she tried to reach for me.
I was standing right at the side of her bed where I got a closer view of her. The piece of dirty white cloth tied around her head was stained with tears. Her hair had grown to her bust as weeks passed. It had always been healthy, soft and shiny. But now it was disheveled, sticking out to every direction. Her clothes were stained and looked like she hasn't changed for days.
But the worst was her body. She was thinner than I remember. Her skin was bruised all over - the side of her lip, her stomach that was revealed by her shirt that had been pulled up, her legs, and her wrists and ankles like the red marks were imprinted by the chains. There were bruises that might have been days old, and there were also new ones. There were cigarette marks on her left leg.
I couldn't stand the sight. I immediately pulled the blindfold down only to see that she had another bruise on her left eye. This is exactly what I feared would happen to her, and what I was trying to prevent. But I failed. Tears threatened to escape my eyes. I didn't know what to do first, or what to expect. Marceline looked at me with tears streaming down her cheek. She only cried, unable to say a word.
I held her and enveloped her in an embrace. "Marceline!" A tear fell from my eye as I burried the lower half of my face into her neck. "Who did this to you?" I whispered as I pulled away to look at her face. She sniffed at she looked into my soul.
"Marshall, take me away from here."
