Headcanon #1: Alex
Alex is obsessed by The Operator and is being controlled by it like a puppet. That's why he's going wild and killing everyone.
But when a victim of The OP's mind control gets freed of him, they are becoming depressed and suicidal because they think they lost their purpose of life.
That means, if Tim would have somehow killed The Operator instead of Alex, he would have probably committed suicide, also feeling the guilt of killing all those people.
What a loop of unhappiness.
