Y/n sat safely hidden from view behind the camera. The lights were bright and illuminated his face and all but glossed over the little blemishes on his face, not that Joe had many to begin with. His red snapback was pulled backwards, his hair peeking out beneath it. He laughs as he scrolls through his questions for the Q & A. She feels warmth blossom in her heart as his lips tug into a smile, and he itches the back of his neck, embarrassed by the question. Joe's cheeks prickled with a powder pink, and he nervously glances away from the camera.
"Uh, no I'm not a virgin." He says, laughing a bit, moving quickly to the next question. Even the sun has long set outside, every time the look of pure happiness spreads across Joe's face, it's almost as if there is a sunrise right here in his bedroom. She continues to remain silent as she simply admires him from her spot on the floor, her own cheeks blossoming into a rosy color of red when his eyes catch hers. The crystalline blue of his eyes don't remain on her long though, but he's still aware she had been staring. It's almost as if she's in the same space as Joe, he has his own gravitational pull and she can't help but hover near him. He continues to film his video, the gravel sound in his voice sounding much lower due to the husk accompanied by the cold he's caught. It feels as if she has caterpillars deep in her gut, wriggling around and bursting into butterflies every time he looks down at her. He closes his video and shuts the camera off before turning his attention to her. His eyes lock her's, a smile creeping onto his face, causing the swarm to flutter freely through her body, igniting every nerve and leaving her tingling.
"Y/n?" He says, after she simply remains silent after a question he asked her. A shudder moves up her spine because of the easy way Joe spoke her name.
"Yeah? Sorry, staring off." She explains, standing on shaky legs. Her palms sweat as she sits on the bed next to him.
"You okay? You seem off?" He asks, moving to turn off the lights. If only he knew that he was currently taking up every corner of her mind, and every available space in her heart. Her and Joe were just friends, she doesn't even remember when she started to see him like this.
"Yeah no I'm good." She reassures him as he takes his camera off his tripod. He turns to face her, a look on his face telling her he doesn't believe her.
"We still going for dinner?" He asks her as he moves to his wardrobe.
"Of course." She tells him as he pulls out a grey t-shirt from his closet. He suddenly yanks his shirt over his head, revealing the skin of his back to her. Y/n turns her head away, staring at something on her phone as she hears shuffling around.
"Ready?" He asks, holding his hand out for her. They always held hands when they went somewhere and didn't feel like attracting attention from girls or guys. They pretended to be together so that they would be left alone, and it was normally fine with her. But tonight Y/n's throat closed when her fingers molded with his so perfectly, and her heart began hammering in her chest when his thumb began to draw soft circles on the back of her hand as they waited for their Uber to arrive. He opened the door for her, and she nearly saw stars when he rested his hand on her thigh as his eyes followed the city outside the window. Joe turned his head to see her cheeks redden.
"You sure you're okay? You're acting very strange." He asks her, leaning closer so that she could hear him. She nodded, smiling at him and giving his hand a gentle squeeze. Y/n doesn't know when this all started for her, when Joe became so immortalized in her mind, as if sculpted from pure gold. Maybe it was when he pressed his lips to hers so gingerly for a dare given by Caspar. Maybe it was the way lighting sparks erupted under her ribcage when he rested his forehead against hers afterwords. Or maybe it was the way he held her when he wanted her to come over, the gentle way his fingers would run over her sides beneath the duvet. Maybe that's how he became so much more than her best friend's little brother.
The city was cool when she finally exited the Uber, following Joe into the little sandwich place he wanted to try in central London. He smiled, his cheeks pink from the crisp wind when he held the door open for her, and she mirrored his expression, her nose feeling like ice.
"Sit down, I'll get you something." Joe tells her, knowing her well enough to be able to order for her. She picks a booth sat in the back corner of the dim cafe, by a window out to the street. Rain began to fall, wetting the pavement and making everything look reflective. Joe moved in front of her, and slid into the booth, placing a numbered placard on the table. His fingers intertwined together after he shrugged his jacket off.
"Y/n. Please tell me what's wrong, I can't take this anymore." He says, a distressed look overtaking his casual expression.
"What do you mean?" She asks him, feeling puzzled at how upset he looks.
"You've been so distant, you hardly speak to me, you hardly even look at me. If I've done something stupid and upset you please just tell me because this whole silent treatment thing you're doing is killing me. We used to be so close, what happened?" He tells her, leaning back in the booth and she feels suddenly guilty. He thinks she's pissed at him because she can't get her stupid fucking emotions in order.
"I'm not mad at you Joey, I swear." She tells him, using her nickname for him as she takes his hand in hers.
"You didn't do anything, I just have a lot on my mind." She tells him and he looks more relaxed after she reassured him.
"You promise?" He asks her, leaning forward again and she smiles.
"I promise." She tells him, pressing a kiss to his knuckle without thinking. She realized what she just did and she releases his hand, feeling embarrassed.
"S-Sorry I don't know why I did that-" She rambles but Joe interrupts her.
"It's okay Y/n I don't mind." He tells her, kissing her knuckle, causing her to blush.
"So what's been on your mind that has you so distracted from our friendship?" He teases, a glint in his eye. Her eyes widened and her mouth hangs dry. How does she tell him that she thinks of a sunrise every time he smiles? Or that his laughter sounds like a beautiful symphony to her? How the fuck does she tell him that she lives for the nights she falls asleep in his arms? Or that she'll drag her fingertips over her lips, wishing to feel his lips on hers again. What the fuck is she supposed to say? Luckily the waiter brings out food, saving her from having to answer Joe's question. She looks up at Joe as he begins to eat, seeing noticeable bags under his eyes.
"Are you getting sleep at night?" She asks him with worry in her voice. He shakes his head, his eyes focused on his phone screen.
"If you stay with me tonight I might actually get some sleep." He tells her, causing her stomach to flip.
"I'll stay." She tells him, and his hooded eyes meet hers, a smile overtaking his beautiful face and fading as soon as it came.
Kinda like a sunrise.
