We all sat back down and took a deep breath.
“Guys, we have to save her.” Max said looking at us. His eyes were red again.
“I think contacting y/n’s mom won’t be much of a problem… but 10 to 20 grand, wow! That’s just so much money for surgery!” Demi said.
“Well we’re not just gonna let her die, Demi.”I said in an unfriendly tone.
“Sorry, Justin, I didn’t mean it like that—“
“It’s ok. I’m just so stressed right now. It’s my fault, I’m sorry.”
“Everything’s a mess right now, unfortunately.”
“Listen. Let’s just call her mom right now. Max, do you know her phone number?”I asked him.
“Yeah, I think so.” he said and gave Demi the number.
Demi took out her phone and made the call.
“It’s ringing.” she told us. She put it on speaker for us to hear too.
Someone picked up. We heard shuffling.
“Hello?” the voice of a woman asked.
“Mrs. yl/n? It’s me, Demi.” Demi said.
“Demi? Oh, I didn’t expect such a long distance call from you! It’s 8: 30 in the morning over here. It must be late over there. What time is it?” she asked.
“It’s 11:30 at night over here.”
“Oh, well what did you call for, sweetie?”
“It’s about y/n.”
“Oh, well how is she?”
“Not well.” Demi said shutting her eyes. She hated to give bad news, I can tell.
“What do you mean?”
Demi explained every single detail to y/n’s mom of what happened. It was an emotional and heartbreaking 30 minutes. When Demi finished, y/n’s mom was in tears. Max and I cried a little too just listening to the whole thing being explained. Demi was definitely in tears again too.
The pain never stops, does it?
“Oh… my baby! I really hope she’s ok.” y/n’s mom cried over the phone.
“She probably will if she gets this surgery though, that’s the good news.”
“Oh, well what are they waiting for?! Do it!”
“But they need your permission. I think you have to sign some papers or something. They need 10,000 dollars or more too in order to do it.”
“Oh this is living hell! I don’t think the next flight to America is anytime soon and I don’t know if I can afford all that money!” she cried.
I tapped Demi’s shoulder. She looked at me.
“Hold on, Mrs. yl/n. One sec.” Demi said. Then Demi turned to me. “What?”
“Listen, I’ll be more than happy to pay for everything y/n needs right now, even the surgery. All y/n’s mom needs to do is give the doctors permission and I think y/n will be set.”
Demi smiled. “You’d really pay all that? That’s so sweet.”
“All I want is for y/n to be happy and perfect healthy. She’s too special to me. I’ll do whatever it takes.” I said genuinely. Demi smiled wide. She turned back to her phone.
“Hey Mrs. yl/n, did you hear that?” Demi asked referring to my mushy speech. I groaned and blushed.
“Yes, who was that?”
“That was Justin, y/n’s ‘friend’.” Demi said with air quotes.
“She can’t see you.” I whispered. Demi rolled her eyes ‘whatever’.
“Can I speak with him?”
“Sure.” Demi said and turned to me. “She wants to talk to you.”
I freaked. “What?! I-I don’t know what to say to her!”
“Just talk to her! She’s nice, she’s not gonna kill you or anything all the way from France.”Demi said rolling her eyes at me. Max laughed a little. I sighed and took the phone.
“Hello?” I said.
“Hello, is this Justin?”
“Yes, this is. Hi Mrs. yl/n. It’s so nice to finally talk to you.”
“Yes, and so I overheard you talking to Demi on the other side of the phone call… Are you sure about what you’re willing to do?”
“Of course. I mean, y/n’s become one of my greatest friends and I’m not gonna let her go just because of a money problem.”
“Oh, Justin… that’s so kind of you to do so! I am so happy that y/n has such a friend like you!”
I let out a small laugh. “She’s been a great friend back. It’s the least I can do.”
“How long have you guys been hanging out?”
“It’s just been a few weeks, but we hang out a lot.”
“She’s never mentioned you in our phone conversations. I wonder why…”
“Oh, well I don’t know either.” I said. “But seriously, as I was saying, I don’t want you to worry about the money thing. I’ve got that under control. It’s just the permission, that’s all.”
“Alright, I will do so. When you can, I’d like to speak with the doctors, please.”
“Ok, but they’re kind of busy right now.”
“Ok, is Max there? Can I talk to him?” she asked.
“Yeah, sure.” I said and handed the phone to Max, who drifted off into his own private conversation with his mom.
