A/N: Okay, this one is so long aha, but I really like it!

--------------------------

The first time that I ever met death was when I was five years old; I was playing out in the street with my friends and my dog, Poppy. It was a beautiful summers day in the middle of July: the sun was shining, the wind was a light breeze that cooled us when the sun became too much and our bodies were lathered in suncream - especially mine.

Now I've always been a clumsy child - and adult - so it wasn't unusual if I tripped for no reason, or stumbled into a stranger and knocked over their coffee or even accidentally knocked over an expensive vase in your Nan's front room, but we won't get into that now.

Anyway, so I was out in the street with my mates and the ball my dog was playing with began to roll away towards the road. Me being me, thought it would be a good idea to run after the ball towards the road that was beginning to get busy, as it was rush hour, but I was five, so I didn't know that. Just as I was about to reach the edge of the road I was stopped dead in my tracks by the shriek shrill of my mother.

"Phil! What on earth do you think you are doing?" she exclaimed from the doorway of our house. "Get away from the road!"

However, the ball had stopped before falling into the road and I hadn't noticed, so I stepped to the side, but my foot caught the ball and I went flying. I'm not exaggerating either; I literally flew backwards and landed on the opposite side of the road barely missing an on coming car.

Everything seemed to slow down, as if time was being stopped and as I rubbed my eyes from the shock I noticed a black, cloaked figure knelt beside me.

"Are you okay?" they asked flatly.

"Uh, I guess," I squeaked, whilst my eyes darted to the scene taking place in front of me.

My near death experience was occurring, as if I was watching my own death about to take place. My mother was mid sprint, my dog was on its way back inside the house and my friends were all stood wide eyed. My brow furrowed and I squinted to try see past the sunlight, as I sat up fully. To say I was confused would be an understatement; I had no idea of what was happening or who this figure was beside me.

"What th-"

"I'm replaying it, slowly," the mysterious figure spoke up once he had noticed my shock. "I'm Dan."

"Phil," I replied, but my eyes remained on the scene in front of me; is that really what my head looks like from behind?

"I know who you are, Phil."

My head darted to face Dan and I was speechless.

"Look, I'm not supposed to save people, I'm supposed to watch you die and then take you away blah blah blah," Dan sighed dramatically. "I'm death, basically. Well technically."

"How can you technically be death?" I crooked an unimpressed eyebrow. I was not impressed by this weird kid; I may have been five but I was not stupid, well that's what I thought.

"My dad's death and I'm training," he finally lifted his head to reveal his extremely pale features.

A scar ran from his brow to his lip, his cheek bones were perfect and I could just make out the slight wisp of brown hair protruding from his hooded cloak.

"Why didn't you let me die?" I frowned. "If it's your job then why didn't you do it?"

"I'm not completely sure," he shrugged. "Just be more careful, okay. I don't want to have to cart you off to wherever you need to go."
