The school festival finally started. A lively atmosphere filled the school grounds and it was as if the entire school was painted with bright colours, making the campus look unusually beautiful. However, this was not the time to appreciate its beauty. At that moment, Mai Ding was very nervous as he constantly rubbed his hands together. After all, this was his first time on stage. He put on the borrowed old ox costume, which only exposed his eyes and mouth. He stood next to An Ziyan: "How is it? How do I look?"
"How good can a cow possibly look?"
"I'm so nervous, I'm scared of screwing up."
"No one will recognize you anyway."
"Do you not have any kind words in your mouth?"
The class president called Mai Ding: "Mai Ding, hurry up, let's rehearse again."
"Okay, okay, I'm coming."
Mai Ding walked forward slowly in his hefty ox costume.
"Mai Ding!"
"What?" When he turned his head back, he was blinded by the flash from An Ziyan's cellphone. Mai Ding angrily stomped his feet: "Why are you taking my picture? Usually when I look pretty, you never take any pictures but now you take them?"
An Ziyan put his phone back inside his back and continued to read his book.
"Mai Ding, hurry up." The class president urged him again.
"I know."
The school festival gala was held at the student hall. Mai Ding stood backstage as he looked out at the audience. Where did An Ziyan go? There were only two more performances before it was time to hit the stage. How could he miss out on such a monumental event?
An Ziyan, who had just come back to school from outside, checked the time as he walked towards the student hall. It was about time for Mai Ding's performance. Every time he was nervous, he would make a mistake. By using Mai Ding's performance when he visited Grandfather's house for the first time as a basis, An Ziyan wasn't very optimistic of Mai Ding.
An Ziyan estimated his time very accurately. Right when he arrived at the hall, he heard the MC announce the cast of the show. Soon, Mai Ding was up on stage. He only had a few simple lines, but he was too nervous. First, there was some narration:
Up in the heavens, there was pretty fairy named the Weaving Girl. Her job was to use a magical silk to weave layers upon layers of beautiful clouds. While down on earth, there a boy who came from a poor, cattle-herding family named Cowherd. Because his parents had passed away, his brother-in-law only gave him a single ex and an old wagon and the Cowherd and the old ox could only depend on one another. One day:
At that time, Mai Ding appeared on stage in a panicked state. Suddenly, his mind blanked out. The few words that he had to say was already a jumbled mess. He stood there and looked the boy who played the Cowherd: "Uh, um, I am a star from the skies above, no, no, I am the old... old ox. You should go peep on the fairy while she's bathing, and then steal some red clothes, that, that person is your wife."
The burst of laughter from the audience almost mad Mai Ding faint from nervousness.
An Ziyan rubbed his forehead. Peeping? He's making the Cowherd sound like a pervert. Afterwards, Mai Ding's remaining lines were also all wrong. When it was time for Mai Ding to leave the stage, Mai Ding was very upset. It was his very first performance and he ruined if for everyone; it was all his fault. Once he got backstage, he saw An Ziyan. Mai Ding took off the heavy costume, showing a bitter expression on his face. Because it was too hot inside the costume, his forehead was covered in sweat. When he looked at An Ziyan, he became even more upset. He pursed his lips: "An Ziyan, I messed it all up!"
