That night, Mai Ding had a nightmare. He dreamed himself: his body was bloody and battered. He dreamed of being thrown in front of the An family’s front door. It was his first time meeting An Ziyan’s family. In his heart, he strongly believed that Wu Xin didn’t like him at all. He was worried the presence would cause the entire family to feel unpleasant and not be able to enjoy the holidays. Even at times like these, Mai Ding still thought about the wellbeing of others. Mai Ding woke up from his dream in a cold sweat. He walked barefoot to the mirror; he looked at himself, then he looked at An Ziyan. It wasn’t like he didn’t know: if he was a little bit more handsome, had a better family background, was a
little bit more intelligent, was a little bit more worthy of An Ziyan, then maybe Wu Xin wouldn’t hate him as much.

“Come here.” When Mai Ding woke from his nightmare, An Ziyan woke up as well, he just didn’t make a sound. After watching Mai Ding stand in front of the mirror for a long time in thin clothes on a cold winter night, An Ziyan finally couldn’t help but scold him.
Mai Ding frowned and turned around the look at An Ziyan underneath the moonlight: “An Ziyan, what
do I do if your family doesn’t like me?”

“I’m telling you to come here.”

After standing for so long, Mai Ding was rather cold. He shivered as he walked over, but he didn’t want to get back in bed: “If I go back for New Years, don’t you think I’m basically asking for beating?” An Ziyan reached his hand out and pulled Mai Ding beneath the warm blanket: “What’s the point of thinking so much? If she doesn’t like you, do I never bring you home?”

“If she doesn’t let me through the front door, wouldn’t I feel super awkward?”

When Mai Ding got under the blanket, his cold and stiff body was instantly soothed. He carefully snuggled closer to An Ziyan.

“Who am I?”

“You’re An Ziyan.”

“Who is An Ziyan?”

“Mai Ding’s man!”

“Then isn’t that good enough? If I can put you in a coffin, then I can get you through my front doors.”

“Hey hey, I don’t like this figure of speech very much.”

“It isn’t a figure of speech.”

Mai Ding pouted, but then happily nestled deeper into An Ziyan’s arms: “I just knew that you’d be an amazing husband! In the future, I’ll rely on you to solve all my problems. I will follow behind you, nibbling on sunflower seeds as you help me clear the thorny road ahead.”

An Ziyan wrapped his arms around Mai Ding: “If I had the energy, I might as well just kill you. Hurry up and sleep.” An Ziyan covered Mai Ding’s eyes with his hand, which reminded Mai Ding of TV shows where people close the eyes of corpses. It was such a bad sign! But this was An Ziyan’s final decision, so
all he could do was tightly close his eyes. Before Mai Ding fell asleep, he realized one thing: An Ziyan would never help him clear the road ahead of him because An Ziyan is actually the thorns on the road.

The next morning, Mai Ding tidied his clothes as he thought about what he should do. Mai Ding’s dad
entered the room and sat on Mai Ding’s bed: “What’s wrong? Before, you cried so much when you begged us. If we didn’t let you and An Ziyan to be together, you probably could’ve committed suicide.
Now, just the thought of going to their home scares you?”

Mai Ding looked at his father; he was slightly upset that his father brought up all these things. Just thinking about how he cried and made a fuss back then made him get goosebumps all over his body. He also said so many good things about An Ziyan.
