I arrived promptly at Matt's house, carrying a small crate of beer underneath my arm. Matt was having a BBQ with a few friends to celebrate his 19th birthday and since we were apart of the same friendship group I was invited but so was Shawn, my ex-boyfriend.
We didn't end on bad terms, just awkward. We were young and inexperienced and well didn't really have a clue how to deal with our feelings. Shawn left for tour a few months later.
I fiddled with the necklace which was resting softly above my collarbone as I waited for somebody to answer the door.
"y/n, hey!" Lauren beamed as she opened the door. "I haven't seen you in like two days."
I chuckled. "I know, how did you survive?"
"Ha ha, funny, now come on! The food is just about to be plated up so you better get there before the boys. Especially, Shawn, you know he can eat for days" she said slight dramatic.
"Trust me" I chuckled. "Me, off all people know that"
She sent me a small smile before urging me to follow her into the kitchen. Matt and Ian were rooting through the cooler for more beer whilst Lauren had slipped out of the back door. I placed the crate on the work top and jumped onto Matt's back.
"Hey birthday boy!" I cheered and he wrapped his arms around my legs to secure me. He then tilted his head sideways to look at me.
"Hey! Yes! You bought more alcohol." He then dropped me to the floor before moving over to the crate of beer. I chuckled and ruffled my hand in his hair before her ushered me out into the back garden.
His back garden was the same as it had always been; a patio, grass, pool and a band stand which was too the left of the patio. There was also a large grill which was being used for the BBQ and an array of chairs and swings which were being sat on by the guests.
Being here made me realise how much I miss being away from my friends when I'm away. Mainly because this garden harboured a lot of my memories growing up. I spent the majority of my days here as a little girl, I met Shawn here, I had my first kiss here and I would spend hours on end talking to Matt as if he was my brother.
I smiled at the memories before making my way over to the group. I sat next to Lauren on the hammock and just chilled whilst I drank my drink that Matt gave me and my burger.
I could feel Shawn's eyes on me constantly but I would be lying if I said I didn't like the attention. There were still feelings for him floating around inside my body which were massively intensified tonight, just by looking at him.
His hair was messy and curly and falling over his forehead, his lips were plump and wet, he was dressed in a black t-shirt and black jeans and his strong jawline was illuminated by the flames of the grill. Oh, and don't get me started on his smile. That boyish smile that had me going crazy had returned.
I was too caught up in staring that I didn't realise him making his way over to me. Lauren jumped up from besides me and ran back into the house allowing Shawn to sit next to me. I scooted over a bit knowing he would need more space than Lauren did and he plopped down next to me.
"Hey." He said quietly, looking straight ahead.
"Hi." I mumbled. The tension filled the air around us and we continued to sit in silence for a while.
The flame from the BBQ was still burning brightly as we swung slightly in the hammock.
"How have you been?"
"Good. You?"
"Yeah, things are good. Tour is good."
"I could imagine." He nodded. "Uh- where you off to next?"
"North America. I'm home for a couple of weeks though."
"Cool."
"Yeah."
I cringed at the situation. I was never good at small talk. I didn't find it necessary or comforting it was just plain awkward; something you did when you weren't sure what to say or how to act around a person.
"Is this as awkward for you as it is for me?" Shawn asked and I laughed.
"Yeah." He turned too look at me.
A small, boyish smile ghosted his lips and his eyes trailed down from my face to my neck. His hand reached out and hovered over my collarbones before brushing my skin and touching the dainty necklace which adorned my body.
"You still wear this?" He mumbled, slightly inaudible, as he fiddled with it. He realised what he was doing and drew his hand back.
"Um- Yeah." I placed my hand on to the litre heart and twirled it in my fingers. "It's my favourite. I hope you don't mind." The blush crept onto my cheeks and I dropped my head in embarrassment.
"No, no. I'm glad you do." I sent him a shy smile. "It looks beautiful on you. It always has. Plus, it's yours."
I nodded and we sat in silence once again. His body was slightly closer to mine and the heat radiated off him. We sunk back into an awkward silence for about about 5 minutes watching the events unravel in front of us.
"y/n, I know we didn't end on the best terms but whilst I'm in town, I would like to- uh- to take you out. If that's okay. I mean I know it might take a while for you to warm up to me again or for us to go back to the way we were but I-" he paused and looked over at me. "I would really like to have a second chance because I miss you like hell- and I know it's unfair of me to say that but I do. I really do."
I stared at him as if he had grown three heads and his warm, brown eyes burned into mine.
"You do?" I stuttered and he nodded.
"Yes. It's stupid I know- forget I said anything."
"No Shawn, I miss you too. I would love to give you another chance but-"
"But I broke your heart. I get it."
"No" I chuckled. "But you have to promise to always buy me pizza whenever I want it." His smile widened and I moved closer towards him. He placed his hand over my shoulder and I placed my head onto his shoulder and laced our fingers together, just like old times.
Happy Sunday❤️
