"Avery?" I hear someone shout as I lay motionless on the floor. I haven't moved since they took Adam. "Hey hey Avery," I hear Jake's voice as he runs towards me.
He scoops me into his arms and holds me tight. I don't feel anything. I feel lifeless, numb.
"He's gonna be ok, you hear me? Im gonna get him out of this mess like I promised," he says as he holds me close to his chest.
I feel tears fall down my cheeks as I grab onto Jake's shirt and sob. I don't know what happened to Adam or why they took him.
He didn't kill his father, I know he didn't.
"Let's get you off this floor," Jake says as he picks me up and sets me on the couch.
He kneels down in front of me and moves my hair from my face, holding my head in his hands. "Look at me Avery," he orders and I turn my head, looking into his eyes.
"I'm gonna take care of this," he says as he searches my eyes. I nod my head and close my eyes, the scene replaying in my head. Why do they think he killed his father?
"He didn't do it," Jake starts, removing his hands from my face and sits on the couch. I stare straight ahead.
"He loved his dad, more than anything in the world. He was his role model," he sighs, leaning against the back of the couch.
"His life is a complicated mess and it's not my story to tell. But trust me when I tell you he would never let you get hurt, and neither will I. I'm gonna help you through this. At least until I get him out," Jake says and I turn towards him and feel my bottom lip quiver.
"Come here," Jake says as he opens his arms. I jump into them and cry.
I miss him already. We barely know each other but I feel like he owns my heart. I don't know when I'll be able to see him and be in his arms again.
Jake rubs my back as I cry into him, letting out all of the emotions I felt.
After what seems like hours I begin to calm down. Jake is still holding me and my eyes are trained on the tv.
"Are you hungry?" Jake asks and I shake my head, going back to watching the tv. "You need to eat Avery," Jake sighs as he stands up and walks to the kitchen.
He comes back with some pizza in hand. "Here you have to try at least," he says as he sets the plate down in front of me and I sigh.
I pick it up and take a bite, chewing the tasteless pizza. "See? That wasn't so bad," he says as he smiles, and I weakly smile back.
I hear Jake's phone ring as he stands up and walks into the hallway. I hear his quiet whispers but can't quite make out what he's saying.
"I have to go Avery. I'll be back in a few hours tops," Jake says as he rushes out of the door and I drop the pizza back on the plate. I feel my eyes slowly close as I lay my head on the soft pillow.
