Fifty-Six

The green flames cleared from your vision and the inside of the Ministry of Magic came into view. The Ministry was normally crowded and quite loud.
This was a completely different story.
Everyone was rushing about, tripping over themselves to get to their offices. It was as if the whole world was in a state of panic.
What had happened?
You walked brusquely over to the newspaper stand to snatch a Daily Prophet. This task proved to be difficult, as the entire Ministry was attempting to get one as well.
You shoved your way to the front and grabbed one, quickly backing away and hurrying to your office. You closed the door, a feeling of relief washing over you as soon as the loud voices were muted.
You loved silencing charms.
You unfolded the Prophet and gasped, a hand over your mouth. You dropped the paper, your hands shaking. After you had regained control of your limbs, you lifted the Prophet.

"Black, you son of a bitch. You finally did it," you chuckled quietly to yourself. You ignored your shallow breathing and flipped to the page with the full story.
"Sirius, goddammit, what have you done...?" Your eyes scanned the article, widening at the amount of Aurors that were sent to find him.
Someone knocked.
"Yes? Who is it?"
"Remus."
"Come in."
The door opened, and a haggard man stepped in. His clothes were in tatters, and his face was scarred.
You stood up.
"Have you seen the news?"
"Who hasn't?"
"He's back, Remus."
"Be careful–"
"Get out."
"Hear me out–!"
"I said get out!"
You glared at your oldest friend, tears forming in your (E/C) eyes.
"He killed Peter, (Y/N)! He sold James and Lily to–"
"STOP!" An anguished yell escaped your lips, tears now pouring down your face.
"He did it, (Y/N)."
"No, no, no, no..." you mumbled to yourself.
"He–"
"He was innocent!" You sobbed.
Remus's eyes flickered to your hand. You glanced down at the beautifully cut diamond ring on your finger.
"You haven't taken it off."
"We were engaged, Remus! We were supposed to get married!"
"I know–"
"And he was taken away from me!" You hissed, rubbing your swollen eyes.
"I'm the only one who believes in him, Remus. I'm not going to stop. He needs me. I'm going to find him."
"(Y/N)! You're an Auror! You're supposed to hunt him down!"
"And that's exactly what I'm going to do. I will find him, Remus. Don't come looking for me."
"(Y/N), please–"
"Goodbye, Remus."
His eyes were wide with hurt from your harsh dismissal.
He walked out, shutting the door behind him. You slumped into your seat and sobbed.
"Sirius," you sniffled. "I will find you... I know you're innocent. You may have lost the world, but you haven't lost me. I still love you..."

"I love you too, (Y/N)."
