Chapter 2

Without a single word, I started running. Grayson was just watching me run in confusion. I could tell he didn't understand why I was so excited about a single car. I didn't know why I was running either, but something deep down told me to get there. As I ran, creatures took notice of me and slowly came at me, but they didn't make it far. Grayson followed closely behind me, killing any of the things that got too close for his comfort.

"Lucy, stop!" He called out to me, but I refused to stop. The closer I got to the road, the faster my heart started beating in my ears. With all of the cars in my sight, there was a good probability that at least one could still run. Even though it was a small chance, it was still a chance. Even if none of them ended up starting, there had to be plenty of supplies to keep us going.

Once I broke through the treeline, I felt my heart jump to my throat as tears of joy came to my eyes. This was no regular road. This was a highway full of abandoned cars. Out of all of these, one has to work. Grayson came up beside me, a look of horror displayed all over his face. That's when I noticed the number of bodies occupying the vehicles.

"Well, let's get started," I said simply as I went to the closest car, he just stood there watching my actions, "you just standing there isn't going to get this done any quicker." I joked as I attempted to open a trunk of a blue '69 Camaro. Camaros were my favorite car, and I couldn't help but pray we could get this baby started.

"This feels wrong Luce, this is practically a graveyard," he whispered as if he was expecting me to agree with him.

"So? It's not like we're playing with an Ouija board," I said trying to lighten the mood with my terrible jokes but his face only hardened, "oh come on, you can joke about lung cancer but I can't joke about this?" Still no answer. I couldn't help but roll my eyes as I continued to struggle with the trunk. After a few minutes, Gray decided to join me on the hunt for supplies. He came out to my car and hopped in the front seat. If anyone was going to get this thing started, it was him. While he attempted that, I got sick of the locked trunk and pulled out my ax and swung it over my head, but before I could, he gave me a warning whistle.

"If you want this to be our car, then I suggest that you leave the glass intact," he chimed in as the car started up with ease. He turned it off as he came over to me and held up a pair of keys. I couldn't help but feel like being childish, so I stuck my tongue out at him. With ease, he slid the key in and popped open the trunk. A duffle bag was stashed in there along with a few canned food items.

Grayson took the bag and practically ripped it open. I couldn't stop my jaw from dropping as my eyes landed on the guns that filled up the bag.

"Shit," I whispered, taking one of the many handguns, judging its weight. I lifted it slightly, trying to figure out how to work the simple gun. I had seen it in movies. Once we find somewhere to settle down, we'll have to start practicing. There were also many boxes of different ammunition for multiple guns. Even with so much ammo, we'd have to start keeping an eye out for more. Especially when we began practicing, I had a feeling that it would go fast. Too fast.

The world around us suddenly started was louder as a couple of vehicles approached us. The RV sputtered as it came to a stop. As people started coming out of the cars Grayson and I held up our new guns in the attempt to look like a threat.I had a feeling I was holding the gun completely wrong with my hands both around the bottom of the gun. I knew that if these people did want to hurt us, there was no way we would be able to stop them. As they gathered in a group, the only Asian guy started laughing at how we were holding our guns.

I couldn't help but be worried. I hoped that these people wouldn't attack us. In this new world, no one was to be trusted.
