Chapter 14

"Mom, we have to go, now!" I couldn't help but cry out to mom as she tried to pull dad from his recliner. His face as cold as it has been his whole life, his dark eyes flashed over to me as he finally rose from his seat. Grayson stood at the front door trying to keep the undead out of the house while we tried to evacuate but dad wasn't going to let us leave without a fight.

"I ain't goin' nowhere and neither are either of you! This is our home, we lived here, meaning we will die here," I couldn't believe the words passing through his whiskey covered lips. Mom tried to get away from him, to get out of this house before the things ripped their way into the house. Anger flashed through his eyes and fear flashed through moms. Before I could step in to stop his hand it landed on mom's cheek, the sound echoing through the house. A fresh trail of tears poured down her face as she looked at Grayson and I, no begging, Grayson and I stay with her.

"Let her go," I couldn't help but hiss at father as Grayson ran past me up the old wooden staircase but Dad and I both heard my voice shaking. The sound of moans from the undead outside the house made mom let out a loud sob as she clung to him. In that moment I knew she wasn't going to follow Grayson and me out of this house.

"Mom," I begged taking hold of her arm as a last ditch effort to convince her to come with me. She knew what I was trying to do as she pulled herself away from me, her hands reaching up for that necklace she has had for as long as I can remember. She held the mountains in her hands for a second more before shoving in into my hands.

"Go see the mountains for me," she whispered stepping away from me towards my dad, avoiding my eyes as they filled to the brim with tears. As Grayson came running down the stairs with a bag of dad's weapon the windows of the front room finally shattered with the joined weight of the undead. He took ahold of my arm pulling me along with him as we ran out the back door, leaving behind the only family I ever knew.

I awoke with a gasp from the dream that came directly out of my past reminding me how I left my mom to die. Reminding me how much of a coward I am. As I tried to steady my breathing I took notice to the pain shooting through my body making me cry out slightly. I knew better than trying to sit up on my own with this bad of an injury.

I finally realized that the room I was in was not one I can remember being in, I was only slightly panicking as I forced myself up from the bed. I couldn't stop the painful groan that came out of my mouth at the sudden movement. I quickly grabbed the knife that was next to me by the plate of food holding it out towards the opening door. Grayson stepped into the room, his back towards me. I felt relief wash over me as I lowered the knife but he didn't seem to take notice that I was awake until he finally turned towards me,

"Lucy?!" He cried out rushing over to my bedside sitting down pulling my body against me making a pain shoot up my back but I tried to ignore it as I rapped my arms around him. The pain must have been evident on my face when he pulled away because his face fell as he started stuttering out an apology but I cut him off by pulling him back into my arms.

"What the hell happened?" I asked, my eyes scanning the room as I tried to place anything familiar but came up with nothing. His body tensed with the question, he made no move to pull away from our embrace. It made me wonder if he was planning on telling me anything with me just waking up from whatever trauma happened to me to cause me to be in such pain. "Gray?" I asked again.

"You don't remember?" was all he mustered out as he hugged me tighter against him.

"I would if you would tell me," I scolded him pulling his arms off of me, attempting to find a comfortable position into the very soft bed. "And where the hell are we?"
