Chapter 16

Gabrielle’s POV

Soon after Harry left, I found myself missing his presence. I tried to shake the feeling away, but it wasn’t very easy.

To occupy myself, I straightened up the kitchen a bit to make sure I didn’t miss any signs of Harry being here that I might question me about. I also remembered that I needed to come up with an explanation of who brought me back home from the rink. I suppose I could just say that one of the employees offered to give me a ride.

Of course I’d have to figure out who I would say. I tried to remember everyone that worked there my dad knew, but not well enough to where he’d call and thank the person or ever really see them anytime soon. I couldn’t tell him it was just some random person who worked at the rink because he would scold and lecture me on how dangerous that could’ve been. In the end though that could be better then having him run into the person I tell him and end up being in even more trouble then.

I soon just decided that I would tell him that one of the employees took me home, and then just see if he continues on with the conversation and asked me more questions. I quickly sat down on the barstool when I heard a car pulling up in the driveway of the house. I grabbed my phone and acted like I was doing something on it when he came in so it didn’t look like I had just sat down even though I did.

I heard the sound of his keys turning in the lock, and then the sound of the door opening. I realized that I was slightly shaking, and my foot was tapping against the bottom of the barstool. I couldn’t really contain how nervous I was. I knew I really shouldn’t be too nervous though, I mean there’s no way my dad will find out right? I really hated having to lie to him, but in this case it’s either lie to him, or be grounded and lectured.

“Hey Gabi,” I heard my dad say as he walked into the kitchen.

“Hey,” I said back,

“How was work?” I asked, trying to go ahead and sway the conversation into a different direction from the one I think he’s planning on going to.

“Boring as always,” he told me and gave me a smile, which I returned.

“No homework?” he asked.

“I finished it, and I haven’t gotten any new assignments,” I lied, I really hadn’t checked if I was given any new assignments to complete, I had completely forgotten.

“Well that’s good,” he said, and went to the fridge, probably to find something to eat for dinner.

“What happened to the pasta salad?” he asked me, and my nervousness and tapping on the barstool came back.

“I ate it,” I stated.

“Weren’t there two servings though?” he asked, still looking in and under things in the fridge.

“Um no I don’t think so, you must’ve eaten one already and forgot,” I offered with a shrug.

“I guess so,” he said, and finally just settled on one of the frozen chicken salad meals.

It felt so weird to lie to him, I’d never really done it to him before, but with the looks of this night and what happened today, it seemed I was going to have to lie all night.

My dad took his meal out of the microwave once the timer went off, and once he had it put on a different plate that wasn’t as hot, he came and sat down across from me at the counter.

“So, how was your day today?” he asked me.

Today was one of the days of the week that he actually got home pretty early, so that meant I had most of the night still ahead of me with him. Which basically meant more opportunities for him to ask questions and me to lie. I knew me have to stretch the truth with him wasn’t going to be happening all night, but it would certainly be on my mind the whole time.
