Rescue

A/N: request for enswimmer1 hope you like it, so sorry it took so long but i hope the wait was worth it 

"(Y/N) glad I caught you" tony says running down the corridor to catch up with me, "what can I do for you tony?" I ask him. "can you give this to Steve, it's the next mission brief" tony says passing me the file, "thanks tony, looks like a fairly easy one should be back in time for dinner" I say flicking through the file. "yeah hopefully, may not even need the full team, I mean if you and cap want to stay back with james we can sort it" tony offers, "james is old enough to be left alone now, its been nice doing missions again" I tell him, "the normal life not suiting you and cap?" tony chuckles. "when will our life ever be normal, even when james was younger the world still threatened to end" I laugh, "yeah I almost feel sorry for the kid growing up around all this" tony says, "hey that's my son you're talking about" I smirk "normal is boring". Tony laughs "very true now you better get to cap with those, I was meant to give them to him hours ago" he says backing away to the labs, "you know he won't be annoyed at you for that" I tell him, "better safe than sorry" tony calls. I laugh to myself as I continue my way to Steve's office "delivery for mr rogers" I smirk leaning up against the door, "well delivery girls are definitely getting better looking nowadays" Steve smirks getting up from his chair to kiss me a quick kiss "thanks doll" he smiles. "no problem tony was too scared to deliver it" I tell following over to the desk and sitting on his lap, "scared why, because its late?" Steve asks, "yeah the scaredy cat" I smile. "right so what is the mission" Steve asks me, "simple take out, small base but every hydra intel goes through it during transmit meaning could be highly guarded, could do stealth attack or smash and grab" I tell him reading the file. "I like the smash and grab idea" Steve says "of course you do, you basically invented it" I laugh. There was then a knock on the door, "mom dad can I ask you something?" james says standing hesitantly at the door, "yeah sure whats up?" I ask standing up from Steve's lap. "is that a mission?" he asks pointing to the file, "yeah but we'll be back before you know it" Steve tells him. "actually I was going to ask if I could join you" james says looking at us nervous at our answer, "james you're too young" Steve sighs. "but I'm 18, peter was younger than me when he started" james points out "dad I heard mom say it was an easy take out, what better mission to start with, its not like I'm asking to go save the world all on my own" james argues. "james let us think about this, it's a big thing to ask remember" I tell him, "its not safe out there james, we just want you to be ready" Steve adds. "so it's a no?" james sighs, "no its not a no, it's a we'll think about it" I tell him.

Me and Steve hadn't spoke about it all day, Steve saying he needed to focus on work. "Steve we need to speak about james, we can't push it under the rug" I sigh sitting down on the bed, Steve sighs putting the book he was reading down "I know I just thought he'd never want to, the amount of times I could have lost you, I don't want to risk losing him too" Steve sighs. I move closer so I could lean up against him "I know I feel the same too, I mean he has bits of me and you in there and you know what we're like when it comes to danger" I sigh, "running to sacrifice everything for each other" Steve sighs "you never know it could have cancelled it out in him" he offers. I chuckle slightly "I don't think that's how it works" I say, silence falls in the room "maybe this is the right place to start" I mutter "he was right when I said it being an easy mission" I say looking up at Steve. "easy for us though, we've been doing this for years" Steve says, "but he has to start somewhere, what if the next thing is something big and we need all hands on deck, at least with this mission there's less risk" I say. "but is he ready?" Steve sighs, "he's been trained by all of us, and us two lets test him and if we and the team feel he's ready then we let him" I suggest. Steve ponders this for a while "I guess so it's the best thing we've got" he sighs, "he'll be fine won't he?" I sigh, "I'll make sure of it" Steve says kissing the top of my head. The next day the team all observed james show off his skills that he had learnt, "I think he'd be okay" tony says coming to stand next to me and Steve while we watched james doing target practice. "the people I'm worried about are you guys" tony continues glancing over at us, "what do you mean?" Steve asks not taking his eyes off of james. "if you guys are constantly worried about him during the mission a mistake could be made, we'll look after him, why don't you guys sit this one out" tony explains, "he's our son I'm not going to sit aside and let him go do something dangerous" Steve says flatly, "we can't sit out tony" I add. Tony nods his head "don't blame you, but if you guys want I'll keep quiet, we all will if you decide to not let him go" tony tells us, "so even though he's passed tell him he hasn't" I say looking back over at james "yeah, I'll let you guys talk about it" tony says walking away. "(Y/N) I need you to tell me I'm being stupid" Steve says quietly, "about what?" I ask him, "that I'm actually considering lying to him" Steve says looking down at the floor. "well I'm being stupid too then" I sigh looking over at him, "we have to let him go don't we" Steve sighs, I nod my head "yeah we do, as much as I hate it" I sigh. james had finished up his practice and started walking over to us "so what's the verdict" he asks, I glance up at Steve "you can go on the mission, but there has to be ground rules" Steve tells him. James nods his head "you follow every instruction we give you, and if at any point we want you back in the jet you go no argument, and no risks not without consulting either me or your mom" Steve tells him, "deal I'll do it" james says smiling with excitement, "and be safe" I add.
