I Promise

1941

"Steve what have you done" I exclaim as I open the door, "I joined the army" he says sheepishly, I let him in not believing what I was seeing. "(Y/N), are you okay?" Steve asks shoving his hands in his pockets, I look at him seeing him in his new army uniform as it hung over his small stature. "no Steve I'm not, how could you do this?" I say shaking my head, "because this is what I want to do, and need to do" Steve argues. "but Steve, I don't want to lose you, I'm terrified for you" I cry, Steve looks at me a mixture of pain and sorrow written across his face "(Y/N) you won't lose me I'll be fine out there, you didn't seem this annoyed at Bucky when he enlisted" Steve argues. " Because I know he isn't going to break easily" I shout instantly regretting what I said "Steve oh I am so sorry I didn't mean to say that" I apologise surging forward, Steve looks at his feet "(Y/N) you're just going to have to trust me with this, please I have to do this" he says glancing up. Our eyes meet and I could see the hope in his eyes, this was his dream and I just couldn't get in the way of it, no matter how dangerous it was. "I know you do, I'm still scared though" I sigh sitting down on the couch, Steve moved sitting next to him "look (Y/N) there's something else I need to tell you" he starts focussing on his hands. I glance over at him wondering what he could possibly say "the unit I've been put in is unit that is kind of a new one, the one to create the first super soldier" Steve explains, I look at him confused "what do you mean?" I ask. "well the guy that enlisted me is this doctor and he has this serum type thing that will turn me into a super soldier" Steve explains, my jaw drops "you're letting a doctor experiment on you! Oh Steve" I exclaim dropping my head into my hands. "(Y/N) I'm sorry, but this is my only way I promise I'll be okay, I trust the doctor" Steve says placing a hand on my back "(Y/N) look why don't you come with me and you can see how I'll be okay" he says. I drop my hands and look over at Steve "okay, I'll come with you, but if this goes wrong and something happens to you, I'll revive you and kill you" I say laughing half-heartedly. Steve takes my hand and rubs it with his thumb "thank you, you are definitely one of my best friends" he smiles.

It was next week and me and Steve were walking into the room where he would become the super-soldier. I stood close to him as he got ready, as he got told to get into the machine I panicked "Steve wait" I say grabbing hold of his arm. "yes (Y/N)? What's wrong?" he asks, I go to say something, the something I had been holding in for a while but I can't "be safe" I say immediately want to say more. Steve smiles and hugs me "I'll see you in a little while, I promise" he says moving to lie down in the machine. I watch as he get injected with the serum, Dr Erskine then approaches me "would you like to watch from the observation room" he says I nod making my way up to the observation room. I bite my nails in anxiety, a habit Steve had told me to stop, I watch as the vita rays grow in intensity. It seemed to be going perfectly until I could hear Steve scream out in pain, I panic instantly running out and downstairs to him "Steve!" I shout, he doesn't hear me evident by his screams "shut it down, you'll kill him" I yell. Mr stark begins to shut it down when Steve yell out "no, I can do it! (Y/N) I can do it" , Mr stark and Dr Erskine exchange glances and continue on. I wait anxiously as it continues and the machines began to short out, then it all stops, the machine opens and I see the new Steve. They help him out and I run over to him instantly hugging him "oh Steve, you're okay" I sigh, it felt weird hugging him and my head only reaching his chest "yeah I am" he sighs hugging me back. I pass him a new shirt and watch in amazement at all of this, he moves to stand next to me when a bomb goes off, Steve grabs me and covers me with his body. "you okay?" he asks worriedly "yeah are you?" I ask as we stand back up, Steve nods looking around. just then Dr Erskine gets shot and Steve instantly runs over to him. I watch as the doctor points to Steve's heart before he goes limp in Steve's arms, I watch as Steve slowly stands up before racing out of the room in pursuit of the shooter. "Steve!" I yell running after him, as I get out onto the main street as Steve races off after the car that the shooter stole. I tried to keep up with him, but his asthma was no longer holding him back. When I finally caught up with him he had just come out of the river and was looking at his new form, only now just taking it in "Steve are you okay?" I ask running over to him. He nods "yeah I'm fine, I'm fine" he smirks, I run over and hug him again all of my worries now gone. He then winces as I do so making me instantly look for where he was hurt "oh my gosh Steve! You got shot!" I say looking out his wound, Steve grabs my hand "I'm fine (Y/N), it's literally just a scrape, I promise" he says looking down at me with a sweet smile. I couldn't help myself I wrap my arms around his neck and crash my lips onto his, he instantly responds kissing me back. His hands rest on my hips and mine cup his cheeks with mine, when we pull away I look straight into his eyes "this isn't just because of the new body?" he asks sheepishly. I smile and shake my head "no I liked you well before the serum, I was just too scared to say" I smile, Steve smiles back "me too" he says kissing me again.
