Maka's Point of View

----------

What are you doing, Maka? I ask myself as I lean against my bedroom door with a sigh. He said he loves you.

But, he can't love me, he only kissed me to wake me up. He said so...

I plop onto my bed, my head and its thoughts fighting violently with my heart's.

Why would he tell me he loves me? my feelings seem to ask. Because he wants you to stay as his Meister, my brain answered in kind, he has to start all over if he has to find a new Meister, right? That's why he told you he loved you.

I cry out in frustration, I wish I knew what to do.

I love him...

Soul's Point of View

----------

What is she doing? I think in frustration, I can't lose her. Not again, not so close to the last time.

I open the door and close it quietly behind me, so to not disturb Maka. I need to talk to someone, fast. And they're always at the academy.

At DWMA

In Death's Office...

"Lord Death?" I ask the seemingly empty room.

"Yes, Soul?" He bounces up to the mirror in the center of the room, "Why are you here so late?"

"It's Maka..." I say, somewhat simply.

My hands stir in my pockets, what if he won't do this for me? I look up at him, hoping he doesn't see the desperation in my eyes, but knowing he does. "Yes, I heard about her accident," he replies.

"It's not that," I sigh. "She wants me to find a new Meister..."

"And what can I do about that?" His voice seems to shrug for him.

"When she drags me in here tomorrow morning," I choose my words carefully. "Will you deny her request for another Weapon?"

"If she wants another Weapon," he prompts himself. "Why would I deny her request?"

I curse myself for this stupid request when it comes to me, "Because," I speak quickly letting my brain do it for me. "We're the most compatible Meister and Weapon pairing you have, taking our souls apart and giving us to another Meister and Weapon, respectively, we won't fight at our best. It would be in your best interest as the head of the Academy to keep us together."

I hope my argument caused doubt in Death's mind, he looks at me with his deep black holes. I would say he's confused, but I can't read him, even if I wanted to. "Hmm..." he says, "Bring her in here."

"Sir?" I ask, shocked.

"I would like to talk to her, now." He says, "Bring her in."

Maka's Point of View

----------

The tears are streaming down my face, knowing my heart's pain as it accepts the loss to my mind. I hear the front door open, I was opening my bedroom door hoping to see Soul one last time before I have a new Weapon.

"Soul?" I ask the silence.

"Yeah, Maka, it's me." I hear Soul's grin in the darkness, but I can hear something else, too, I just can't put my finger on it. "Death wants to see you in his office."

"Why?" I ask, shocked. "It's late, I'm tired."

"He says he wants to see you now, Maka," is that pain in his voice?

"Fine," I sigh, "I guess I'll go."

"I'll walk you there," he replies. "Like you said, it's late you shouldn't be out alone."

"I can take care of myself, Soul," I smile sadly to the darkness.

"No," he insists. "Calypso could come back, what would you do?"

"Fine, whatever," the pain doesn't stay hidden in my voice.

We walk in silence through the streets toward the Academy, Soul's hands buried deep in his pockets, his eyes on the ground. Even in silence I'm comfortable with him, "Look, Soul, I..."

He stops and meets my Emerald eyes with his Ruby ones, my breath catches. "Nevermind..." I whisper.

When we reach the school Soul stays in the courtyard while I enter the building, I reach the familiar empty office. "Death? You wanted to see me?"

"Yes, Maka, hi." He bounces to the foreground of the mirror, "I hear you would like a new Weapon."

"Yeah, I..." I lose my words as they form on my tongue.

"May I ask why?" He asks, getting closer to the wall separating the two of us.

"Our relationship has taken an inappropriate turn," I try to explain.

"I see..." He brings one large hand to his face, "Well, Maka, that's to be expected."

"Sir?" I shake my head, I must have misheard him.

"You're souls are perfect for each other, for lack of a better way to say it." He shrugs bringing both large hands level to his cloaked shoulders, "I'm afraid I have no choice than to reject your inquiry for a new Weapon."

"But, Sir, I--"

"No buts, you're going to help Soul finish his mission. I won't hear of it any other way," he says. "Goodnight."

I shake my head again and walk slowly from Death's office, I meet Soul outside again.

"What did he say?" Soul asks when I reach him at the gate,

"He won't let you find another Meister, sorry," I say.

"You're the one who wanted me to find another one, Maka," he shakes his head. "I wouldn't want to have anyone else as my Meister, I love you."

"Stop lying to me, Soul," I cry. "You only kissed me to wake me up, remember?"

"Then why would I do this, Maka?" He asks exasperated as he steps closer to me, agonizingly slow.

"Soul, what are you--?" His lips interrupt my sentence.

That is the second time I've been interrupted tonight! My brain complains as my heart and soul melt into his.

Oh shut up, you love him, too, my heart speaks.
