the sunlight filtered through the window, awakening a sleeping yamaguchi. he cringed and yawned before slowly opening his eyes, then having a panic attack.

the other side of the bed was empty.

he sprang out of bed and bounded down the stairs to the living room.

she wasn't there either.

he entered the kitchen to find it empty as well. as he approached the fridge, he found a post it attached to the fridge's door.

it read "out for a while, so take care of yourself for the time being! — sarah"

he breathed a sigh of relief. so she wasn't kidnapped or anything.

he opened the fridge and retrieved two eggs. cracking them over the pan, he started up the gas and began to make himself breakfast.

for the rest of the morning, he sat around and checked his messages. he received a chain of 'happy birthday's from friends and relatives alike.

but not anything from her.

as the sun began to set, he began to worry as she hadn't returned yet. he left multiple messages, which were all unread, and even dialled her cell. none of his calls were answered, so he left a message behind.

the sky was now dark, glittering with stars. there was still no sign of her.

that was it. yamaguchi was heading out.

he put on a coat over his shirt and jeans, and slipped on a pair of slippers. never mind it was cold out, he needed to find her. her safety was his utmost priority.

he began to head out into the streets, asking passers-by if they saw a girl that looked like her. they all shook their heads.

and then he saw her.

walking with a huge plastic bag in her hands, contents unknown.

he spotted her and dashed forward. he stopped in front of her, bare hands on her shoulders.

"tadashi?" sarah said, "what are you doing out here?"

"you didn't reply to any of my messages and didn't answer your phone, so i thought something happened to you and i got worried," he explained, "i'm glad you're okay!"

she smiled and wrapped an arm around his broad shoulders with a "thank you for worrying, tadashi."

he broke away from the hug and glanced down at what she was holding.

"what's that?" he asked.

"let's go home first, okay?" she said, taking one of his hands in hers, "you're shivering, tadashi."

indeed he was. his teeth were chattering and he was shaking under the coat.

"i left the house in a rush," he said with a reassuring smile, "i'm fine though!"

she started taking off her mittens and slipping them on his larger hands.

"wear my mittens at least," she said, "you can't fall sick."

"but you'll fall sick too!" he said, taking the mittens off and shoving them back at her.

"i'll be fine," she insisted, "you take them."

he sighed, "if you insist."

once safely back into their home, sarah led yamaguchi into the living room. she took out a white box and placed it on the table before carefully unfolding it.

sitting in the middle, was a vanilla cake. on the top sat a rainbow of m&ms which spelled out "tanjobi omedeto tadashi!", along with a failed iced picture of a volleyball.

"you made this?" yamaguchi asked, his eyes on the cake.

she nodded shyly and said, "suga taught me. i hope it's acceptable."

he broke into a huge grin and tackled her in another hug. he buried his head into the crook of her neck and said, "it's more than acceptable. thank you, sarah. you're the best present i've ever received."

"and you're the best boyfriend i've ever had," she said as she squeezed him back.

"happy birthday, tadashi."
