We are
Fish out of water
Out of our element
We dive
No drown,
Into the depths of our
Despair, the unknown lurking waters
That drag our heavy sinking selves
Deep
We flail
And struggle
To our dismiss
Reaching for that ray of light
Even as we're dragged down further
And so we plunge,
Fin-less, and gill-less,
Our webbed feet no more,
Human lungs straining to take
Just one more breath
Just one last breath
Indeed we do not fit
We struggle, to fit
In the sea, whose water we contaminate
Whose creatures we hunted and ate
Who, in its revenge, have claimed us
We are fish out of water
Gasping for our last breath except
We are not fish.
And so it seems we are destined
To drown a watery death as humans
In the deep dark sea
