Chapter 30.
“No! My calculations were correct. She should still be here!” Bishop yelled as his right fist slammed down on the medal table in front of him. He had just received the news that Moonlight did not make it. She had died sometime in the night.
“How? Was it just her heart?” He asked the guard who had told him.
“Yes sir. It was not strong enough to maintain a working body. It was at rest for far too long, sir.” The guard said.
“Get Stockmen on the line. Tell him to continue with his serum.” Bishop ordered. The guard left the room, and Bishop fell back into his chair.
Stockmen was working on a serum strong enough to give strength to a dead human heart. Bishop needed it to work, otherwise his promise was broken. He still remembered the day he had met with Shang. Shang asked him to watch over his daughter Moonlight, and do whatever it would take to bring her back if she were to die. Shang had been a good scientist and friend to Bishop. When Shang died, Bishop couldn’t find Moonlight. It was almost like she had disappeared off the face of the Earth.
“I won’t let you down.” Bishop said looking over at the wall with a picture of him, Shang, Moonlight, and Stephen. “Never.”
Leo stepped into the crypt and let his eyes adjust to the darkness. In front of him laid four coffins. One for Moonlight, another for her Mother, one for her father, and the last for her brother. He walked into the center of the small room and sat down on his knees. He closed his eyes and began to meditate. His mind was all over the place. He and his brothers were still shaken at the thought of Moonlight’s death. The way that they had found her. Her eyes partly open, blood pooled out around her, gushed out of her stomach, and ran out of her mouth. How was it possible for someone to have so much blood?
Even through his restless mind, he felt something off about the room. His eyes opened again and looked around. His head moved from side to side scanning the room. But he stopped when something shined into the corner of his eye. He walked over to it and picked it up. Flipping it in his hands, he saw that it was a police shield. Thinking that maybe John had come to visit with Moonlight he was about to clip it to his belt and leave. But then the engraving caught his eye. It was not the NYPD, but the Earth Protection Force.
“Bishop?” Leo spoke aloud. Then his stomach flipped over at the thought of Bishop being in the crypt. But why? Leo thought. Then his blood turned cold, and every nerve in his body tingled. His eyes shot over the Moonlight’s casket. Fear shot through his body. His body seemed to move without his knowing and he walked over to the coffin. Placing his hand on side of the lid, he pushed just a little and found that it moved with ease. He pushed a little more, then a little more. His heart seemed to stop when he could inside of the case.
Moonlight was not in the coffin.
Raph had awoken to the sound of Donny calling his name.
“Raph we need to go. Leo said something happened. He seems to be pretty shaken up about it.” Donny said as he leaned over Raph who was laying in his hammock.
“What happened?” Raph asked.
“He didn’t say. He just wants us to meet him at the cemetery.” Donny said.
After everyone was ready to go, they drove out to the cemetery where they found Leo crouching beneath a tree. They walked over to him and saw that his face was greener than usual. Around the trunk over the tree seemed to be through-up. John walked up to Leo and placed a hand on his lover’s forehead. “What happened?” He asked.
Leaning against the tree Leo told the story of how he found the badge. But he didn’t say who it belonged to.
“So maybe John left it here one day.” Raph spoke, wanting to get out of the cemetery.
“That’s what I thought.” Leo said, as he handed to the badge to Master Splinter who stepped forward.
“What? You found this in the crypt?” Splinter asked breathless once he saw the engraving.
“Yes.” Leo said, feeling like he was going to be sick again. “And that is not all that I found.”
Master Splinter handed the badge to Raph who passed it on once he looked at it. “Bishop.” He whispered. “But why would he come here?”
Without a word, Leo walked over the crypt and signaled for everyone to follow. He stopped dead in his tracks and pointed inside the building. Raph watched as one by one, Donny, Mikey, John, and Master Splinter walked into the crypt and walked out with a disgusted look. Raph took a deep breath and walked into the crypt.
The dark from the night sky did nothing to help him see. To him everything looked fine, until he looked over at the coffin the belonged to Moonlight. The Lid was propped open a little. Just enough to look inside. He walked slowly over the case and peered in, expecting to find a half decayed body, but instead he found the coffin to be empty.
