When Rosland's economy fell, she was forced to auction many of her personal belongings. The necklace was the one thing she refused to sell.
No one has any idea how much it really means to her.
She hated being around people because she always saw herself as an outcast wherever she went. Then she was hired, given a job to raise a child for a clueless man, and that's what she saw it as for a long time- a job. Then Santiago, someone who hated her as she hated him, gave her the necklace, a gift, and for the first time, she felt like she belonged somewhere.
She'll always change the subject when someone brings it up, though.
