The ballroom glittered like diamonds and Jet was covered in dust. It had taken them most of the day to get the room set up, all the tables perfectly decorated and the gold and red floral centrepieces arranged to Nates perfection. The couches had been moved around to create small pockets for intimate groups and all the electronics set up for the DJ. Jet couldn't believe Nates stupidity at having a ball on such short notice. They take months to prepare an people always needed plenty of time to appear, Jet fell down on the couch, his body completely drained.
He closed his eyes, seeing the table centrepieces fill his vision, the twisted silver sticks trailing forever upwards. Nates heavy footsteps turned in Jets mind like the ticking of a clock. Jet opened one eye, ready to face the detonation.
'What do you want?' Jet said leaning back on the couch.
'You gotta help, Jet.' Nate replied.
Jet took a sharp intake of breath, his body revolting at each movement. 'Why?' Jet seethed. 'Why did you decide on a ball at the last minute? You know how long these take to prepare.' Jet lost control and shouted his last words, the glass walls rattled in protest.
Nate pushed his fingers through his hair and shuffled his feet. The silence dragged onwards.
'Actually, I've been planning this ball since Georgia came here. When she got...kidnapped...I just postponed it. But now she's back, she deserves a proper welcome.' Nate said, looking anywhere but Jet.
'And you decided not to tell anyone?' Jet said through gritted teeth.
'I thought it would be better that way.' Nate responded, looking Jet in the eyes, daring him to call him out.
Jet backed down as Nate knew he would. Nate sat down next to him, sensing his worry.
'When are the girls getting home?' Jet sighed.
Nate shrugged his shoulders. 'Soon. But you got help me set up first.'
Jet rolled his eyes. 'Fine, what's next?'
A smile broke out on Nates face and he pulled a list out of his pocket.
'We've still got to get the cobwebs off from the entry walk.'
Jet glared across to Nate. 'I hate you.'
Nate chuckled. 'You'll be fine, mate.'
Jets body had long ago frozen on his bed. He could feel the cobwebs sliding in his hair, their hosts parting his locks like a foreign jungle. He'd made it as far as getting his shoes off. His body ached, like nothing it ever had before. Nate had worked every ounce of energy out of him. The girls had arrived at least 2 hours ago, with Sam and Aly rushing Georgia off. Jets mind churned, worried for her safety, he needed to see her for himself.
'Don't even think about it!' Sam's voice broke through his thoughts.
'How did you...'
'You were broadcasting them, not very good at keeping your emotions hidden.' Sam teased him. 'It's going to be a surprise. Don't ruin it.'
'Can't wait.' Jet scoffed.
His body jerkily responded to him as he headed towards the bathroom. Guests would be arriving soon and he had to help greet them. Another thing on Nate's stupid list.
The lavender walls welcomed Georgia back instantly. Aly headed straight to the walk in robe with the dresses and Sam to the bathroom with the makeup. Georgia dropped the shoes at the bed end and crawled into her unmade bed. The city had been beautiful, the lights bright but she missed the quiet.
