A howl echoed into the room and Aly snapped her eyes open to see the man turn towards the open balcony doors, then he was gone.
Racing after Chad.
She hoped that Chad could get away fast enough. She remained frozen wishing for someone else to come but no one did. She looked through the crack and saw no movement, she took a deep breath and slowly pushed against the door, bracing herself for a sound. Aly carefully climbed out, her feet light on the floor and checked for others.
She was alone.
For the moment, she was glad of it.
She tiptoed her way into the hallway, moving carefully through the open door. Braced for any kind of surprise. The smell of vampire overpowered her nostrils.
It smelt older, like musty varnished shoes that had been left to rot in the corner for decades.
Aly put her hands on the banister and leaned over, trying to clear her sinuses. Her hands came away sticky, she wiped it off on her top and glanced over where the light struck. Illuminating a spray of blood. Aly freaked out and ran to Georgia's room. She knew what had happened but she hoped that maybe she was wrong, she flicked on the light.
The room was trashed.
Georgia's bed lay in pieces and feathers blanketed the room. A small patch of blood soaked feathers lay near the bathroom door. Aly backed away, her mind shattering apart. She stood in the hallway and stared through the large window into the dark night beyond.
She could feel its inky tendrils poke and prod their way into her mind, warping her vision. Turning the house into a monster.
'Promise me Alyssa. Promise me you won't stay here.' Chads voice rung in her mind, offering her comfort.
She couldn't convince herself to move, her mind screamed at her to leave and listen to Chad's words but her body wouldn't move. She stared down at the chaos below. The vase of orange lilies lay shattered atop the broken wooden table. The petals strewn across the room, crushed by heavy boots.
In a few moments, this place had changed. It had distorted her reality and broken her family. She had seen how sinister this place looked.
It wasn't her home anymore.
Footsteps came from downstairs. Aly grabbed a piece of broken banister and carefully made her way down the stairs. She was going to be strong for her friends.
Their lives depended on her now.
Aly made her way towards the basement door, stepping around a relatively large pool of blood. A large smear showed that they were dragged out the door.
She swallowed the bile in her throat.
'They are immortal, they've probably already healed.' She convinced herself.
She crept towards the archway and into the kitchen.
The footsteps drew closer.
Aly ran, throwing open the basement door and clambered down the steps, not caring who heard her.
'Stop.' A voice in the distance called.
She continued running, through the sparse collection of freezers looking for the tunnel Sam used. Her eyes were not prepared for the dark but she strained them, focusing on the concrete.
Her heart pounded in her ears and her mind ran through scenarios.
It all ended with her bleeding on this basement floor.
No one knowing what happened to her.
She had to hide, she searched up and down the basement, crawling on her hands and knees for this small hole. She found it, hidden behind some barrels. She hurriedly moved them out of the way, letting them roll along the ground.
She glanced back and a dark shape drew closer.
Aly closed her eyes and jumped down into the darkness.
Someone grabbed her arm.
They tightened their grip and pulled her up. Aly bit her lip in anticipation as she closed her fist, just like Chad had taught her.
She waited patiently, her feet touched the concrete and she swung her fist around.
Aly caught them in the jaw.
They stumbled back, head down and their body dripping with fresh blood.
Aly's anger fuelled her comments. 'You pig!' She screamed. 'Murderer.'
They swung their head back and that's when she saw it.
She gasped at what she had just done.
At whom she had just hit.
