Georgia pressed her face against the cool stone. Trying to hide the shame flooding her cheeks. Nick had left her woozy on the floor, dumped like an old shirt.
He'd left the mirror up and she had crawled out of Jets line of sight but he still hadn't said anything. She knew how hungry she looked when Nick offered up his wrist, the salty taste of his blood as she savoured each mouthful. She guiltily relished the lingering taste in her mouth.
'Nick said he would be back.' Georgia whispered to Jet.
She pressed her face deeper against the stone, wanting to feel each imperfection as the silence rang out.
'Do you have a plan?' Her small voice carried out.
She attempted to cover herself with her limbs but her movements were slow and agonizing.
'Please, talk to me.'
She waited for a non-existent response, anything to keep her going. Georgia pressed her lips against the stone, breathing in its chilling touch.
'It's quiet here.'
She pushed out, searching for that magnetic pull, her mind felt heavy and her eyes drooped.
'I know you're there. You promised I wouldn't be alone?'
The silence wrapped around her and the cold air ravaged her deflated and bare body. Her mood sunk lower than the ground beneath her.
No one was going to save her.
The thought ripped her apart inside, her eyes trained to the door in fear. Nick was coming back to destroy them further. She closed her eyes and dreamed of another world.
The suffocating silence followed her.
'We need to hurry.' A voice hissed in her ear.
She opened her eyes to Alice, her panicked face and eyes darting left and right. She pulled the tattered floral curtain tight around the window and ran out of the room, her shoes silent on the creaky boards. Georgia toddled after her, catching a glimpse of herself in a half lighted mirror. She was small, three years old at the most, brown unruly hair, the same as Nate's. She rubbed her sleepy eyes, chubby fingers sticking into her eyeballs.
This was the first time her dreams didn't put her in Alice's shoes.
Alice stuck her head in, her long hair haphazardly tied up. She gave Georgia a smile, the light didn't reach her eyes. 'Come to mummy, Marissa.' Alice held out shaky arms.
Georgia ran straight into those thin arms and felt the weightlessness that comes with being carried. Alice pushed the thin panelled door open and ran into a dense cluster of trees. Their leaves springing open in the warm breeze and soaked the moon's filtered rays.
Georgia gripped tightly to Alice as they ran, the branches no longer stroking her face and roots meant to trap others. Alice cradled the shaking Georgia in her arms.
'It's okay sweetie. We are going to be fine.' Alice gave another pained smile.
'Trees stop us.' Georgia's voice croaked, her high pitched trill bouncing off the hungry trees.
Alice laughed, her eyes lighting up that dark forest for a split second. She gave a playful smile and looked around at the dense trees. 'We're going to play a game.'
Georgia nodded.
'The floor is lava and we are going to jump across these roots. Are you ready?' Alice nuzzled Georgia's nose.
'Hold tight, Marissa.'
Georgia held her stubby arms around Alice's neck and dug her chubby knees into her ribcage. Alice took off, clinging tightly to Georgia and sailed across the tree roots.
