-----------------------------------

Nate pounded his fists against the coarse stone wall. Screams broke his personal punishment.

He couldn't fail now, he was so close.

He squeezed his eyes shut, the pounding of his fists became methodical. The screams burrowed into his brain, twisting as they moved.

Sam screamed for him to run.

Alice screamed to him in pain.

Marissa screamed at him for not being there.

He had betrayed them all.

The voices gathered, pouring out in unison as his mind echoed everything he had done to hurt them. He punched the stone and felt it crack beneath his knuckles. All was silent as he opened his eyes to bloodied fists. The wall was a mess of blood, a smeared artwork of his pain. He tested his fingers, feeling the scrapes stretch and tear further. He wallowed in that pain, focusing on the physical manifestation of him.

He had failed again.

The door opened and a dainty figure crept in behind him. Nate turned, dreading to see who was there.

'Nathanial.' Isabella called in a girly voice. She ran over and hugged him. 'We can finally be together.' She gazed up at him with doe like grey eyes, brimming with never-ending devotion. A smear of blood ran across her nose, as if she had half-heartedly attempted to clean the blood off.

Nate carefully escaped Isabella's grip and stared at her like a child.

'Why is that?'

'That common vampire is gone. Which means you're free.'

'Sam is very dear to me. Where is she?' Nate struggled to keep his voice even.

'Gone. It doesn't matter. All that matters is that we can be together.' Isabella smiled.

'Isabella.'

She swayed on the spot, her short skirt flaring out slightly. 'Call me Bella.' She giggled.

'Bella.' He said sweetly, trying not to choke on his words. 'I need to help Sam.'

Her features turned cold and sharp. 'Why? What about us? Our lives will be far more exciting.' She got a wicked look in her eye. 'I'll prove how much I love you.'

Nate started to fade out, he always wanted to help Sam. From the first moment he saw her. She was casually strolling through the market, studying an apple with curiosity, she made a face at the apple and giggled to herself. She skipped along to the next stall and gazed across at the variety of vegetables on offer, her eyes wide as she saw sunburnt orange pumpkins next to moss green beans.

Those big sapphire eyes looked at the world through rose-tinted glasses.

Nate was transfixed to his spot outside the butchers stall. She turned and stared at him, giving him a small smile, his heart stopped for a second.

Sam was going to be beautiful.

Her childish chubbiness was melting away and showed off her high cheekbones. Her long lashes floated carelessly above her eyes, a strong jawline seemed to blend softer the longer he stared. He watched the upturn of her lips spread wider, a dimple creasing on the left side of her cheek. She unconsciously touched the bright pink ribbon in her hair.
