It was a late night after a long case. Sergeant Hank Voight was in his office, light on, doing paperwork. He was the only one upstairs in Intelligence.

He looked up when he heard a knock on the side of the door. He noticed a familiar face.

"Sergeant Grant Parker," Hank seemed to sound happy to see this man, "It's been a long time."

Grant shook hands with Hank and then watched the Sergeant of Intelligence sit down. Hank was about to return to his paperwork, but closed it upon seeing a file in Grant's hand.

"Heard a rumor you need a damn good tech expert for Intelligence." Grant said.

Hank shuts his file he was working in, "Heard correct."

Grant hands the file to him, "I know how you work things Hank," Grant started, "I mean I had to deal with you for a long time in Gang Unit before well you know-,"

Hank notice Grant point to the missing ear. It came back to Hank. Fifteen years ago when Hank was still in the Gang Unit, him and Grant were partners for a while. On a bust, they were attacked and within the crossfire, Grant was shot in the head. The gunshot destroyed his ear and lost his hearing in his right hear, since then Grant only teaches at the academy.

"Yeah, I know," Hank said keeping Grant from talking about it, "So this file is?"

"Remember Riley Schmidt?" Grant asks.

Hank looks at Grant a bit confused, "The kid from Canaryville seven years ago?"

Grant nods, "Yeah. Look I know she got into some trouble but-,"

"Some trouble? Grant, she did more than some trouble." Hank said.

"I understand," Grant said, "But read that file. That kid, she's intelligent. She'd be perfect for your unit."

Hank doesn't say anything.

"Just think about it, Hank." Grant said.

Hank watches Grant leave. As Grant left, Hank opened the file. The file had a photo of the girl when she was sixteen, and it listed many things relating to background and abilities. As Hank read more and more of her files, the more he was investigated in her.

At the bottom of the file listed her employment, he grabbed his jacket and keys as he began to leave his office for the night.

Hank arrived at a grocery store a couple of blocks from the district. As Hank entered the small grocery store, he noticed that some employees were giving him looks.

He walked down in the direction of the back room, he knocked on the door and opening it was a larger man.

"Yes?" The larger man asks.

"Looking for Riley Schmidt," Hank said.

The larger man groans, "God if she's involved in a crime she is fired."

The man shut the door in Hank's face, then a few seconds later stepping out was Riley Schmidt. She was now twenty-three years old and really looked it.

Hank knew the second she looked at him, she knew who he was. She wrapped her arms around herself a bit unsure.

"Detective," She said.

"Actually Sergeant now," Hank clarified.

Riley nods, "Whatever you think I did, I didn't do it." She said.

"I'm not here because I think you committed a crime," Hank said.

Riley seemed to lower  her guard a bit, "Then why are you here?" She asks.

Hank shows her file, "Is this true? That you are a skilled expert in tech? Can work your way around a computer better than anyone?"

Riley eyes him, "Who's asking?"

"Me," Hank said, "I want to offer you a job in my Intelligence Unit."

"Why? Because you feel sorry for me?" She asks.

Hank shakes his head, "What happened seven years ago, that night- it didn't have to end that way. Things could've been different."

"Is that it? You want to make up for what happened then de- Sergeant?" Riley asks.

Hank shakes his head, "No. I think you can do better and you can, Riley. The job is yours, be at district 21 tomorrow eight am if you're serious."

Riley watched the man leave her with that offer. Within seconds, she returned back to the room she was in the back of the grocery store. She passed the larger man just watching the cameras in the security room. Riley went to the employee break room, grabbed her things and just left through the back exit.

As Riley ran around the grocery store building, she noticed Hank Voight by his vehicle. She ran over to him, calling him for attention.

Hank stopped, "Decided?"

She looks at him, "No one can know my past." She said.

Hank nods.

"Do I get an office?" She asks.

"You'll have space, yes." Hank said.

Riley thought about it for a moment then added, "So eight am?"

He nods.

A small smile appeared on her face, "Thank you."

Hank just looks at her and say, "Prove to me you are worth this job."

She nods.
