CHAPTER-1 THIS ISN'T GOODBYE FOR SURE
"Auntie, I'm heading out for work and I'll be back around 7!" I informed her from down the stairs where I was busy putting on my dark brown leather boots and instantly heard her reply as she hollered back, "Okay sweetie! Take care and please try not to drop things. Do you have your phone?"
I swear I heard her chuckle at the part about dropping things but all I could do was shake my head from side to side knowing very well that she was right. I had to get a grip on that.
"Okay and yes," I replied, half-smiling half-grimacing as I realized that I was going to be late if I didn't hurry.
Quickly grabbing my furry brown knee length coat, I lunged for the door and shuffled out of the warmth of our 2-storey modish house which had been completed just last month, and thus it appeared brand new without a trace of dirt on its plain cream walls as it stood tall in all its glory amidst the lush green manicured lawn, my uncle ensured were always maintained. The slanting grey roofs provided an edge to its uniqueness and my favorite part were these wide windows in my room to let maximum sunlight in. The house was comfortably big enough to accommodate the three of us. Actually I found it to be unnecessarily huge but I wasn't complaining at all.
It was a 10 minute walk to this Italian restaurant that had recently been set up in the neighborhood by Aunt Sarah's dearest friend, Jenna Clarke, a woman who was a little too bubbly and optimistic for me to handle but I'm guessing you know how I got the job now and its definitely not because of my amazing serving slash cooking skills.
As I passed by the rather lavish and extravagant buildings that people called their homes, I hugged my coat a little bit tighter to avoid the chilly air I had come to despise since the time we shifted in this town called Woodhurst which definitely owned up to its name because it was indeed full of nature and trees. How ever it was, it was my home now and I was grateful for it because despite everything the people here were extremely welcoming except for a few nosy neighbors and the town itself was gorgeous and peaceful, which was precisely my thing. Plus, I have always considered myself lucky to have a roof over my head because I knew not everyone had a place they could call theirs.
Penne with a Twist
I could see the board glittering in the distance and I braced myself for another stressful evening at the not-so-popular eatery because I knew for a fact that no matter how hard I tried Jenna Clarke would have every reason to kick me out if I so much as dropped a spoon. Yeah, her crockery was that precious to her and it was kind of scary to watch her lose her mind over it.
"Hey, Lucy, tell me that Jenna isn't here yet?" I shot as soon as I set foot inside the eatery and saw Lucy, my acquaintance and friend behind the counter making coffee as she cursed at that dreadful ancient machine.
"Remind me why Jenna asked me to keep this devil? Oh yeah because she couldn't part ways with her chocopie! I mean seriously, chocopie?" She glared at it for a minute before finally turning towards me with a huge smile lightning up her blue eyes. Yeah, I precisely remember that day.
"Guess you got lucky, Abi. She has an appointment with the dentist," Lucy beamed as she added some cream to the coffee before handing it over to Seth who then rushed off to deliver the order acknowledging my presence with a nod.
"So she does eat all the cupcakes of her own bakery. That rumor isn't a rumor at all," I added and we both laughed at our own private and pathetic joke. Actually, the 38 year old woman owned a small but well known bakery in the next town over and had been running a successful business with her husband, who was rumored to be secretly dating someone. But I don't want to comment on that honestly.
