Leila xxCalum (15):
Your family was a close one. You got on well with your parents, and had always been close with your siblings unlike many other families you had seen.It was the perfect group of inseparable friends - Calum, Mali and you. The age gap wasn't huge, so the difference in maturity didn't hurt your relationship a tiny bit, but there was always the problem that you couldn't stay together forever.
When you were younger, you always dreaded the day Mali would move out. It was inevitably going to come, but you wouldn't be able to deal with having a third of your heart cut out, your best friend.
However, the time eventually came and you survived it. There were many tears from everyone, but soon enough you realised that Skyping worked just as well and you counted down the days with Calum until her return, spending every waking moment together to make up for the missing piece.
The holidays came quickly, and you found yourself cuddling on the sofa with Calum watching films almost every day, dancing around your bedroom together and playing hide and seek in the dusty basement. It was childish, but it was the Hood way.
Mali's arrival was eagerly awaited, and when she did show her face again you were ecstatic.
"Mali!" you chorused with Calum, leaping into your sister's arms. "I've missed you so much!"
"I've missed you both too!" she giggled. "University isn't as fun as everyone makes it seem."
The greetings were long and full of passion, making up for lost time, and you then pulled Mali straight into your room, slammed the door, and chatted for hours about everything she had missed.
The next two weeks were spent in a similar manner; you and Mali were joined at the hip, wandering through the park, shopping, bonded in a way only sisters could understand.
(A/N so unrealistic me n my sister have zero bonds)
The other person that understood this bond, however, was Calum. He sank into the background, a mere shadow in the family he used to be such an important part of, and you didn't notice. Neither did Mali.
There appeared new presences in our house, it turned out Calum actually did have friends and they practically moved in while Mali was around, not that either of you noticed. They ran around and played instruments loudly, filling the house with high-pitched giggles to rival the ones echoing downstairs from your bedroom.
When Mali came to leave, you broke down.
"It's ok Y/N, I'll be back before you know it!" she smiled but couldn't mask the tears behind her eyes.
"I'll miss you," you sniffed, leaning into your sister's shoulder for one last hug.
"I'll miss you more," she said, then turned to Calum. "I'll miss you too, Cal!"
Your brother accepted her hug, but his heart clearly wasn't in it as he grunted out a disinterested reply.
The next couple of weeks were hell for you.
Suddenly you noticed there were three new people around the dinner table - Luke, Michael and Ashton - and your parents treated them like old friends. You could swear you had never met them before, despite them being around almost every day.
Calum didn't speak to you any more, it seemed you couldn't just go crawling back to him and the loneliness began to get unbearable. It didn't take you long to confront your brother about it.
"Calum, please talk to me?" you asked quietly. "Or can we watch a film or something?"
There was a brief silence; you thought he wasn't going to answer, but then he sighed heavily. "Why?"
"What do you mean, why? I'm your sister, we were so close... What happened?"
"How stupid can you get, Y/N!" he snapped, all the pent-up emotion finally flooding out. "We obviously weren't as close as I thought, as soon as Mali appeared you forgot about me completely! I'm not just your worse option to fall back on, it's not fair on me! Mali's your favourite sibling, you both love each other, how about you just leave me alone!"
"But..." you trailed off. How hadn't you seen what he was going through? "Calum, I'm sorry."
"Save it, Y/N," he spat. "The boys actually value me. They're like my brothers, better siblings than you two anyway. How about you get a taste of what it's like to not be wanted?"
Alternative Ending
"How stupid can you get, Y/N!" he snapped, all the pent-up emotion finally flooding out. "We obviously weren't as close as I thought, as soon as Mali appeared you forgot about me completely! I'm not just your worse option to fall back on, it's not fair on me! Mali's your favourite sibling, you both love each other, how about you just leave me alone!""I'm sorry, Calum!" tears pricked at the corners of your eyes. "You're my favourite, I just got caught up in the moment because Mali's been away for so long. I wish you'd hung around with us more when she was here, we both missed you and it wasn't the same without you there. Please, I love you?"
He contemplated your words for a moment, then smiled. "I love you too."
"And next time Mali comes, we can all be together again?"
"That sounds horrifically cheesy, but yeah."
