Calum (17):
"He's looking at you."

"No, he's not."

"It's true love's stare," Michael laughed. "Either that or he's judging you for not being able to ice skate."

Despite not wanting to give in, you couldn't help yourself and glanced across the rink to where Calum was, indeed, watching you clutch to the wall for dear life. He blushed and looked down when your eyes met, and you felt your own cheeks heating up.

"Nope, he was definitely checking you out," Michael said, slowly skating next to you as you pulled yourself across the wall. "Don't worry, I'm judging you for not being able to ice skate."

"Leave me alone."

"What sort of best friend would I be if I didn't bully you?"

"I don't know, a good one maybe?"

Michael just cackled and skated off to join Calum, immediately saying something that made the other boy turn even redder. Your tummy fluttered and you cursed it; you were just friends with Calum, you had more important things to focus on than boys, there were actual exams to worry about.

But when Michael had invited you to go pre-Christmas ice skating with the other boys, you couldn't say no. This stupid crush was so distracting, and everyone made fun of you no end, but you just couldn't shake it.

Today wasn't all about Calum, though. You had also discovered you couldn't ice skate to save your life.

"Where's your sense of balance?" Luke grabbed your arm before you fell again, his eyes sparkling with concealed humour.

"Conveniently, I don't have one," you grumbled.

"Do you need a hand?"

"I'm fine," you said, more to save your pride than admit you were terrible at skating and would need intense therapy to forget this experience.

He raised an eyebrow. "Suit yourself."

It was only when he had zoomed off into the distance that you realised you were in trouble. Luke had pulled you into the middle of the rink, the wall looked like it was miles away. This was a war zone.

Michael was still cackling, which only increased when he realised your dilemma. Luke made no move to help you, smirking slightly as you waved your arms trying to balance. Ashton had opted out of the whole thing, and stood on steady ground with his phone out, recording you.

It was only when a pair of hands clasped yours that you really began to panic. Not Calum, anyone but Calum...

"Are you ok?" Calum asked.

"Yeah..." you laughed awkwardly. "Just... not great at this."

To your surprise, he didn't make fun of you like everyone else. "Here, I'll teach you. It took me ages to learn."

His grip on your hands tightened, and you were sure he could feel your rapid pulse threatening to burst your chest.

"Th-thanks," you stuttered.

Michael locked eyes with you at he glided past, and sent a very unsubtle large wink.

This would be fun.

Calum's hat warmed your shivering head. The hot chocolate clasped in your hands was already sending waves of warmth through your fingers to coax them into movement, and you were wrapped up tightly in a fur coat, but the lingering icy frost persisted to make your teeth chatter.

You had long since abandoned the other boys, choosing to spend more time alone in your perfect little bubble than be reminded of what you didn't have. Spending time with Calum was fun, you got along well once you pushed aside the butterflies and actually had a proper conversation.

"Are you still cold?" Calum laughed, slinging an arm around your shoulder to share the body heat. "You're wrapped up like a burrito!"

"The ice tortured me. I have PTSD from that."

"You weren't so bad by the end," he smiled, fixing a gaze on you.

His eyes couldn't seem to linger on one point. Were they flitting to your lips?

"Only because you were basically dragging me. Sorry, by the way, I completely ruined your fun."

He stopped abruptly. "Are you serious? I had so much fun with you!"

Were you just imagining it, or was he moving closer? The noises of town faded into the background, the chattering passers by becoming blurred while Calum's face sharpened and you could see every tiny detail.

His voice lowered and became husky. "I always have fun with you."

Then his lips were on yours and the cold was gone, the ice a lost memory, and his hands still sent electric sparks through the thick coat and jackets. Your hot chocolate and restricted movement prevented much reciprocation, but you kissed him back with as much joy as you could muster.

It was only when you ran out of air that you had to pull apart, both gasping for breath.

"Michael's never going to let me hear the end of this."
