Michael (16-ish):
Contrary to popular belief, having a twin did not also mean having a best friend. Sure, you were close to Michael but at the end of the day you were just siblings - there was no telepathy, no inseparability, and you weren't even that similar when it came down to it.

Your taste in friends, however, ended up being exactly the same and although you made an effort to avoid Michael at school, you were somehow drawn into the same friendship group right from the start.

***
Ducking your head, you hurried into the looming building in front of you for the first day of Year 10 - and although you hadn't moved schools, this was the year your classes were switched around and you were brutally torn away from your friends.

You had heard the stories from people in older years, who insisted that you would make even better friends and no longer want to be part of your old group, but you were sceptical. After all, you knew everyone in your year already and had sought out the better ones... right?

"See you, Y/N!" Michael said chirpily, and you knew why he wasn't at all gloomy. He was still in the same class as his best friend, Calum Hood, and they were bound to stick together. As for you, you were alone in the shark tank.

But contrary to what you presumed, you began talking to someone as soon as you entered the classroom.

"Hi, I'm Luke," a blond boy diverted his attention from a thick textbook, and you sighed in relief  that someone was talking to you despite knowing clearly that this someone was Luke Hemmings, Michael's sworn enemy.

"I'm Y/N," you smiled.

"Michael Clifford's twin sister?" he raised an eyebrow. "Wow. You're much prettier than he could ever be."

You giggled at that, and shook your head. "However much you think you dislike him, I have it worse."

Soon enough, you found yourself immersed in conversation with Luke - he was funny and outgoing and easy to talk to; everything Michael wasn't. Of course, your brother wouldn't be happy when he found out you were fraternising with the enemy but you couldn't help it. How had you never spoken to Luke before?

Lunchtime rolled around quickly, and you found yourself dragged to an unfamiliar table by Luke, where surprisingly your brother was sitting with Calum and Ashton Irwin.

"This is Ashton," Luke smiled at you. "We've been friends since Year 7."

"Michael?" you glared at your twin.

"Y/N?" he spat back at you, gesturing frantically at Luke.

"Calm down, man," Calum chuckled. "Luke's not actually bad, I don't know what your problem is."

Awkwardly, you and Luke lowered yourselves into seats and the conversation struck up again. Soon enough, you found there was nothing to worry about - Ashton was hilarious and charming, Michael's feud with Luke fizzled to a halt before the end of the day, and to your delight you all got along like a house on fire. And from then on, the five of you were inseparable.

***
"Luke!" you squealed, pulling your best friend onto the sofa and launching him into a hug as he pushed through your unlocked front door. "I was just about to text you!"

"It's our twin telepathy, I knew I had to come over," he laughed. For two years there had been an ongoing joke that maybe you and Luke were the real twins; you definitely acted more like it. Even you regarded him as your long-lost brother, closer to you than Michael for sure.

"Can we watch a film?" you asked. "I want to watch Happy Feet."

"Penguins?" Luke chattered excitedly. He had been going through a huge penguin faze as of late.

"BUT you have to get the snacks," you smirked and he groaned before heaving himself off the couch and trudging into the kitchen.

***
Through your half-closed eyelids you registered the TV screen fade to black, and faintly realised the film had ended. Still, neither you nor Luke made any move to untangle yourself from your position - his arms wrapped around you while your head rested on his chest - until a loud crash properly jolted you awake and the lights flipped on.

"A cuddle and film date?" Michael said sadly. "Why wasn't I invited?"

"What?" This took you completely by surprise. Surely he was familiar with you and Luke spending obscene amounts of time together.

"Did you not want me here?" he asked.

"What? No, Mike, you know me and Luke are best friends, we're basically siblings-"

His sob alerted you to the fact that that was the wrong thing to say. "I knew it! I knew you prefer Luke to me, he's a better brother to you. Calum and Ashton tried to protest but they knew it too. I'm not good enough, am I?"

He stormed off as you clung to Luke for support. He was as shocked as you.

"What's going on with him?" you muttered angrily, but Luke pulled you onto his lap.

"Don't be annoyed, he's upset and jealous because it seems like you prefer me to him," he said.

"I do though?" you chuckled and he smiled weakly.

"He's still your twin brother. He's worried I'm replacing him."

"Oh," you said in a small voice before standing up and rushing to Michael's room.

His door was wide open, leaving a plain view of him lying on the bed with his eyes trained on a spot on the ceiling, the closest he got to crying. Despite everything you weren't the hugging type, so instead stood in the doorway as he stared at the floor.

"Luke's not replacing you, you know that?"

"Huh?"

"You'll always be my annoying twin brother, Luke can never take that away. And I know we joke about being twins but it's all light-hearted. He's only my best friend and that's all he'll ever be."

"I know," Michael sighed. "You just always refer to him as your better brother, your second twin. I thought I was doing something wrong."

"No. Never," you laid down next to him. "Honestly, we only treat each other like siblings so you don't assume we're dating."

"You're dating?!" his eyebrow flew into his hairline and your jaw dropped.

"NO! No no no no no no nononononono. You're just quick to assume..."

But Michael was already up and off downstairs to where Luke was waiting - clearly his sadness had evaporated, and now you had a whole new problem to deal with.
