Leila xxLuke (7):
The decision for you to move in with Luke became apparent when you were six years old, and your parents began their divorce process. In the months leading up to this point you had experienced an ultimate low in parenting, often left to your own devices for basic needs such as food and supervision. As soon as he came to visit, your older brother noticed the worsening familial situation and demanded he took you to his own house so that you could stay safe and alive with someone that loved you - a decision you weren't going to complain about.
Finally, there was a guardian in your life; finally, you didn't have to be a tiny Bear Grylls and fight for your own survival because Luke was there to do it for you. It was the first peace you had had in months, and at long last you settled into being a child again.
This lasted for a year, and gradually you began to accept your life with Luke, something you loved and would never give back even if it meant being with your parents. But there were bumps in even the smoothest of roads, and soon enough you found yourself faced with an argument that was all too familiar to you.

The rain beat down on your head and your teeth chattered as you glared at the ground, clinging onto your tiny backpack and desperately holding back tears. School had ended half an hour ago, all your friends were gone but you were stuck in the playground, shivering in the middle of a storm.Where was Luke? Your brother was never late, unlike your parents he never forgot about you. But still, you remembered being in this situation all too clearly and knew exactly what to do.
Sighing, your little head lolled on your shoulders as puddles formed around your feet and you began to trudge down the street, hoping beyond hope that you could make your way back to Luke's house. Before the move you had been able to trace the journey back to your parents' house with your eyes closed, but the unfamiliar scenery of a new town threw you off slightly.
Still, you continued on, hopping over puddles as big as lakes and wrapping the dark blue mackintosh firmly around your icy body.
Whether it was fate or a stroke of luck, you didn't end up walking far before you were stopped by a shout of someone in a car.
A murderer?
No, you realised with a flood of relief, just Michael and Calum.
"Y/N! What are you doing?!" Michael shouted out of the window, his face obscured by the sheets of rain pounding down on you. "Where's Luke?"
"He didn't come," you frowned. "So I'm walking home."
You heard Calum mutter a word not often used in your presence, and stifled a giggle. Now was not the time.
"Get in the car, Y/N, we'll take you home," Calum gestured to the back door and you gladly climbed into the vehicle, warmth enveloping you so the shaking stopped slightly.
"Luke is so dead," said Michael through gritted teeth as you pulled up in the driveway. His tone frightened you slightly and dread filled your gut - the same tension hung around him as it had done with your parents when they argued.
Your tired-looking brother heaved the door open a while after you knocked, his eyes slightly too bright and sweat clinging to his skin, a half empty bottle of cider in his hand. "Y/N? Where have you been?"
"A-at school," you shivered, moving slightly behind Michael. This was a side of Luke you'd never seen before, swaying and stinking of alcohol. "Y-you didn't c-come and get me."
"We found her walking home," Michael snapped. "And you've been here drinking?"
"I've had a rough day, this album is getting nowhere! I was in the studio all day with no outcome and right now Y/N's the least of my worries!" Luke yelled, fire in his eyes as he stiffened up with anger. "I didn't ask to be her parent!"
A sob built up in your throat and you couldn't contain it. The last thing you wanted was to stay with Luke in this state - perhaps Ben or Jack would be better to you, actually pick you up from school and not get angry if they forgot.
You tugged at Calum's sleeve. "Can you take me to Jack's house?"
Luke's eyes widened and he dashed inside as his friends watched helplessly. He was drunk, there was no denying, but it was a shock for you to ask to leave. Even through the walls, Luke's crying rang through your ears and you immediately felt guilty.
"Did I make him cry?" tears welled up in your own eyes.
"He's not very well, squirt, he's drunk some bad apple juice. I think we should go to Jack's house," Michael said gently but you frowned.
"But Luke's still my favourite, remember."
"Maybe you should go and tell him that. Grab some clothes for the night and say bye to Luke?" Calum suggested and you nodded tearfully.
After pulling out some pyjamas and throwing them into your school backpack, you crept into Luke's bedroom. The door was wide open and he sat with his back to the wall, tears streaming down his face.
"Lukey?" you poked your head in. "Cal and Mikey are taking me to Jack's house, they says. But you're still my favourite always."
He visibly brightened up at your last statement, before settling back against the wall.
"They're probably right, I can't look after you in this state," he mumbled. "I'll come and get you after school tomorrow?"
"I love you, Lukey."
"I love you too."
