Ashton:
The boy with hazel eyes and a cheeky smile caught your heart on the very first day of school. You had been sitting alone in the playground, tiny backpack at your feet as the other children laughed and played make-believe, while you were too shy to ask anyone to play.

And then he appeared, an angel with curly hair.

"I have that backpack. Do you want to play with me?"

You smiled up at him. "I'm Y/N."

"I'm Ashton."

From that day forwards, Ashton was your best friend in the world.

***
"Happy Valence Day!" you squealed, hopping into the classroom a few months later with a beaming smile and skip in your step.

"It's Valentines, not Valence!" Ashton giggled. "I made you a card."

In his hands was a scarlet, messily cut out heart shape with your name scrawled in glitter pen, and 'I luvs you' written inside.

You bashfully turned your gaze to the floor. "I love you too."

Every year after that, Ashton was your Valentine. He didn't ever disappoint, the cards becoming more extravagant, the gifts more expensive. Even when you were in a fight, or drifting apart, the Valentine's tradition was forever upheld.

When you were 13, early in high school, he decorated the inside of your locker with adorable pink and red hearts. This sparked a lot of rumours, obviously, and for a short time you and Ashton were the gossip of the school. No matter how many times you tried to tell people you were platonic, they didn't listen.

It didn't bother you much at the time, so the next year Ashton dramatically proposed to you with roses in the school corridor. When you were 15, he sang you a song.

The rumours became widely accepted as the truth, and the two of you gave up trying to dispel them.

It was only when you were both 16 that it became a problem. Ashton had a girlfriend, and she was less than pleased to find out about this little tradition the two of you held. Despite explaining that you were just friends, it sparked a huge fight between the three of you. That year, you received nothing from Ashton except a Snapchat of him on a date with his girlfriend.

The next year, still nothing. And the year after that.

It appeared Ashton had forgotten about the Valentine's Day ritual, but you definitely hadn't. Even February you would close up a little, still waiting wistfully for your best friend to show up with a scarlet card and some sort of funny present.

He was away on tour when you were 19, and the same when you were 20. You went off to pursue your own dream, and after a few failed attempts at romance, you found yourself single in February at 21.

It was a call from Michael that changed everything.

"Come on tour with us for a bit."

"What?!"

"Please? It'll be so much fun, we're young and free! You're a part of our little group, even if you're not in the band."

"Mike, I- I can't just up and leave."

"Why not? We haven't see you in forever."

Truthfully, you didn't have anything important happening. It wouldn't be difficult to just take off on tour with your favourite boys, but there was something holding you back.

"I'm not sure."

"Is this about Ashton?"

You sat up quickly. "What?"

"He's told us about that Valentine's thing you used to do. I'm not exactly the expert, but it sounds like you're into him. Or he's into you."

"I'm not into Ashton. We've been best friends since we were 4. And he's definitely not into me, I mean, he's the one that stopped the tradition in the first place."

"Yeah, because he was dating that bitch," Michael scoffed.

"Um, only for that one year. And after that, he stopped with the Valentines."

Michael paused for a long time, before taking a deep breath. "Do you think it's time for you to pick up the tradition?"

"Me?"

***
You weren't exactly sure how Michael roped you into it, but somehow you found yourself waiting at the airport on Valentine's Day for the boys to pick you up.

But it was Ashton who saw you first, face breaking out into a beaming smile as he sprinted towards you, throwing his arms around you in a bear hug.

"I've missed you so much!"

You smiled. "Happy Valentine's Day."

Ashton took the messily cut, heart-shaped card from your outstretched hand with wide eyes. His name was scrawled on the front in glitter pen, much neater than the one from years earlier.

Inside, there were only three words, but it was enough to bring tears to his eyes.

'I luvs you.'

"I love you, too."
