~A/N~ Some background on Divergent: There are five factions which value different things - Erudite (intelligence), Candor (honesty), Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (bravery) and Amity (peace/friendship). Everyone is born into a faction, then takes a test at 16 (I think) which shows where they belong, and they can choose their faction at a Choosing Ceremony.

Calum (16):
The blue collar of your Erudite jacket rubbed uncomfortably against your neck, and your hair pulled tightly at your scalp. It hurt, but you would have to bear it and try not to look too longingly at the Dauntless, running in their loose black tank tops with hair flowing in the wind.

"Come on, Y/N," your twin brother pulled at your hand. "We've got a test."

"Like you studied for the test," you shoved Calum playfully and he narrowed his eyes.

"Don't say that too loudly. There are too many people."

It was always a huge fear of his that people would find out he didn't belong to Erudite - with a less than average breadth of knowledge and no desire to stretch that, he stuck out like a sore thumb among the intellectuals around him. The only people that knew he wanted to move were you and his best friend, Luke.

"Hey!" Luke called, running up to you with his notes flying from his backpack. "Have you studied?"

"What do you think?" you laughed, and Luke grinned.

"Not much longer now."

***
The five bowls loomed in front of you, burning your eyes as you breathed heavily in front of the crowd. There was the water in the Erudite bowl, watching carefully as though willing you to spill your blood over the clear liquid, signifying you would remain in the faction of intelligence.

But it wasn't the faction for you.

So with a deep breath, you stared into the eyes of Luke and Calum who already knew, they knew you didn't belong with the blue blazers and stiff white collars of Erudite. And you spilled your blood on the burning coals of Dauntless.

The side of the room clad in black jumped up and burst into cheers as you smiled at Calum, trying to avoid your parents' eyes when you took a seat next to a pale boy with faded green hair and tattoos adorning his arms.

"I'm Y/N," you stuck out your hand to shake, and he high fived it.

"Michael. Welcome to Dauntless."

When your new faction quietened down, you turned back to watch Calum choose his faction. His eyes barely lingered on the water in the Erudite bowl, skimming over Dauntless and Candor before he smiled at the Amity bowl and spilled his blood into the soil.

You cheered and smiled, watching proudly as your twin brother made his way to the Amity section and took his place among the laughing teenagers dressed in scarlet and sunshine yellow. Soon, he would be one of them and you would be a Dauntless. Luke would stay in Erudite, and the three of you would be separated.

But you would never drift apart.

"Are you still awake?" Michael mumbled against your neck and you sighed, rolling back on the mattress.

"Can't sleep."

"Nervous?"

"It's been two years since I last saw Calum, of course I'm nervous. What if it's not the same?"

"He's your twin brother, babe," your boyfriend said, kissing your cheek and pulling you closer. "And he always will be."

That placated you slightly, but you were still trembling as you crossed the train tracks to the Amity faction, following the familiar route that you had sprinted across late at night with Dauntless friends into unfamiliar territory.

And there he was, wearing a bright crimson t-shirt with faded jeans, so brightly contrasting your blank tank top.

"Calum?"

"Y/N!" He leapt on top of you in a hug, and you grinned at the contact your rarely felt from anyone that wasn't Michael. "I've missed you!"

"I've missed you too," you smiled. "How's Amity?"

"I belong here. Everyone's friendly, they care about peace and laughter and there's no pressure like in Erudite. I've got so many friends, there's my best friend Ashton over there!"

He pointed at a boy with curly hair and dimples, who waved happily.

"It's beautiful," you said honestly, looking around at the trees and streaming rivers, children playing clapping games on the grass.

"How's Dauntless? I'm surprised I haven't seen you jumping across buildings."

"It's... free. I'm not trapped anymore, I can adventure and have fun. I've got a boyfriend, Michael, and so many friends."

"I spoke to Luke at a conference a couple of weeks ago," Calum smiled. "He's happy in Erudite, but he misses us."

"I miss him too. I wish he was here right now."

"Well, initiation's over and we're free to do what we want, go where we want," he said. "We should meet up more often, bring Luke too. Just like old times."

"Just like old times," you echoed, gazing into eyes identical to yours. It was ok, everything was ok. Calum was happy, so were you, and though you weren't together you were still as close as ever.
