Calum (22):
If me and you are living in the same place
Why do we feel alone?

It felt like every moment with Calum was rushed, shoved between various excuses to enjoy the better.

"I won't be home until late, I'm at the studio."

"Y/BFF/N is having a girls' weekend so I won't be in."

"We're having a compulsory banding night."

"One of my co-workers is off all week so I have to cover her shifts."

Your house was always empty, the ghost of a couple who was once in love bouncing off the walls and echoing through your tense silence. You slept in an empty bed, knowing that while Calum wasn't cheating, he was definitely in someone else's bed.

"Calum has stayed at mine every night this week," Ashton finally intervened. "Don't even pretend everything's fine."

"Everything is fine," you sighed. "I guess we're just... falling out of love?"

***
'Cause lately we've been living in different nations
Enemy lines are drawn, lines are drawn
We're speaking different tongues communicating
Right through the bedroom wall, bedroom wall

It cracked your heart to say it, but the pang didn't last long and was replaced with heavy acceptance.

"Really?" Ashton sounded sadder than you, which made you feel worse.

"I guess we just don't understand each other in the same way. We used to dream of big things for the future, but not anymore. We do the things we used to, we buy each other presents and do... other things, but it doesn't mean anything. The passion is gone."

"You can fix it, right?" Ashton chattered worriedly. "Rekindle the spark?"

"I'm not sure, Ash," you shook your head sadly. "But I can try."

***
I just wanna get back to us,
'Cause we used to have more

You weren't too broken to try. There was still an ache and a lust for Calum, still love despite it fading. So you called him in a desperate attempt to build things back up.

"Hey, baby," Calum's voice crackled down the broken line. "You ok?"

"Not really," you sighed. "We're not ok."

He paused, tension flooding into your ear. "I know."

"I want to make things better. I want to go back to how we used to be."

"So do I," he said immediately. "We used to have so much more. I want the love back."

"Come home," you replied. "We can sort this out, now please come home."

"I'll be back in a few," he hurriedly said goodbye, not bothering with a declaration of love as you both knew it would be a lie.

A click signalled the end of the conversation, and you waited patiently by the door. Ten minutes passed, then twenty. Maybe there was traffic?

An hour later, you called again and there was no reply. Panic filled your lungs; what if Calum had given up on you?

After four hours, you had given up hope. Perhaps it truly was the end of your relationship.

But then you got the call.

***
"Calum was hit by a car," the doctor explained to you. "The impact injured his brain - while it won't be fatal, I can't promise that the boy in there is the same one you know, or will ever go back to normal."

"What do you mean?" Michael demanded.

The doctor sighed, hunching her shoulders as she took in the four broken, panicked figures in front of her. "He has amnesia."

Tears threatened to leak from your eyes, but you had to be the strong one - Calum was top priority. It was decided that Ashton should see him first, being the most emotionally stable, and the rest of you were left to your own thoughts.

"I wish that I could wake up with amnesia, and forget about the stupid little things," you whispered shakily to yourself, cursing the irony of the situation. "I wish I could wake up with amnesia. Not you."

"I'm not fine at all," Luke butted in, hugging you from behind. "None of us are fine."

Michael silently strode over to the seats and collapsed, burying his head in his hands as Luke held you in a trembling embrace, both so afraid for a boy you loved.

"What if he doesn't remember me?" you sobbed softly.

"He will," Luke promised, "don't worry."

***
"Are you one of the nurses?" Calum smiled when you entered the room, and your world crashed around you. "Could I have some water?"

"O-one minute," you dashed out of the room and burst into tears.

"Woah, what's up?" Luke put a hand on your arm.

"He doesn't remember."

It was ironic, really, that that morning you had been thinking you had nothing, wishing that you and Calum could go back to the past when you had more. Now you truly knew what nothing was, and you would've sold your soul to go back just a few hours.

In trying to get more, you had lost everything.
