Ashton (21):
You groaned loudly and smashed your head on the desk repeatedly. It was 3am, your brain was burned out but you were wide awake from downing three cups of coffee at midnight.

"I. Hate. Uni!" you accompanied each word with a crash as your head hit hard wood. It hurt, but your senses were numb at this hour.

"Are you okay, Y/N?" Ashton's tired voice sounded from across the corridor, and you realised how much noise you were making, probably keeping your poor flatmate awake.

"Yeah, sorry, just trying to finish this paper!"

During the brief silence that followed, you figured he had gone back to sleep but were proven wrong as your door swung open and his sleepy smile greeted you. "Need a hand?"

"No offence, but what help will you be? Your degree is in music."

"I'll have you know that music is a very academic subject-"

He was interrupted by a loud beeping from your phone, signifying only one thing. It really couldn't have been at a worse time.

"Sorry, can I just take this call?" you glared at your phone, the words 'RED ALERT' flashing bold on the screen. Couldn't the villains just lay off until morning?

"Yeah, I'm going back to bed anyway," Ashton was looking at his bright red watch worriedly, clearly just noticing how late it was. "I have to get up early tomorrow. Or should I say, today."

He dashed out of the room and you grabbed your phone, quickly activating it with your fingerprint.

"Base to Y/N?"

"Luke?"

"We have a problem."

"What now?" Your irritation shone bright through your voice, but you did nothing to disguise it. After all, you were running on pure coffee.

"Some low class villain who calls himself Mike-ro-wave. He's apparently been going around the city and stealing all the pizzas."

"For god's sake!" your own stomach rumbled at the mention of pizza. "Where is he?"

"Just down the road."

"Right. I'm on my way."

You pulled open your wardrobe door and climbed inside to change into your supersuit. Shimmering violet fabric with a deep black velvet mask covering most of your face, rendering you unrecognisable. Tailored by Luke (who held more skills than you gave him credit for), it fit perfectly and held more secret abilities than you could remember.

Whatever the situation, you were prepared. Luke could be a dork, questionable company at times, but at the end of the day he was the reason you hadn't died one hundred painful deaths.

Not that this 'Mike-ro-wave' sounded at all menacing.

"Base to Nightshade?" Luke's voice erupted out of the black 'N' emblazoned on your chest. It was more than just a fancy logo, it was your means of communication.

"You know I hate that name," you snapped. "If you hadn't insisted on it being my 'superhero name', we'd all be in much better moods."

"Have you slept at all?" he asked gently.

"No! Because someone called me up in the middle of the night to deal with a pizza thief!"

"Copy that. He's about a hundred metres in front of you."

"The pasty guy carrying all the pizzas?"

"Roger."

"Can you stop with the walkie-talkie stuff?! Should I just go in, or..."

"One sec," Luke said, "I'm getting a reading of another superhero in the area."

"Smash?" you guessed, watching the blue and red figure fall from the sky on top of Mike-ro-wave. He was the other superhero in your area, determined to get in the way of every mission with his glimmering smile and scarlet spandex.

You were determined to find out who it was.

"Roger that. Now's your chance, while he's distracted! Go pull off the mask!"

For once, you agreed with Luke's advice and flew over to the pair on light feet. Smash had all his attention taken on detaining the thrashing boy underneath him and didn't even notice you until you had yanked the mask over his head to reveal a very familiar face.

"Ashton?"

"What! No..." he trailed off, then stared at you closely, taking in your eyes, lips and hair pulled back into a tight bun. "Y/N?"

"Ash, what's going on?" you heard a panicked voice from an earpiece in Ashton's ear.

"It's all right, Calum, just... my flatmate's here, and she's Nightshade."

"Y/N is Nightshade?"

You vaguely recognised the name Calum, but couldn't connect it to a face. Instead of dwelling on it, you began to curse yourself for not realising that Ashton was a superhero.

"How can I have been living with you and not realise you're Smash?"

"I could say the same," he frowned. "Wait, so that phone call wasn't just any phone call?"

"And you didn't really need to go to bed," you smiled. "Luke, are you getting all this?"

"Loud and clear."

"Wait, Luke Hemmings?" Calum's voice sounded incredulous. "One sec."

There was the sound of a scraping chair, then some footsteps and a nervous chuckle from Luke. Then Calum's voice was audible again, but this time from your communication device.

"You two aren't the only flatmates that have been leading double lives."

Suddenly it clicked. That's where you knew Calum from, he lived with Luke!

"Either that's a coincidence or a setup," Ashton shook his head, but giggled all the same. "Anyway, home?"

"I need to finish my paper."

"And I need to really sleep this time," your flatmate laughed, taking your arm and strolling away back to your apartment.

None of you noticed Mike-ro-wave, forgotten in the confusion, slipping away with his stack of pizza boxes into night's dark veil.
