Calum (22):
You and Calum had been together since the age of 16, and it had been a wild ride. You'd watched him start the band and leave on his first Australian tours, you'd been there to celebrate with him when One Direction asked him to support them, and you'd been there for all the albums and shows, the highs and lows, the late night studio sessions.

You thought it had been paradise. But one of your friends got you thinking.

"I can't believe you've managed to do long distance all through Uni," she said, lying on your bed while scrolling absent-mindedly through her phone. "Like, turning down all the hook ups and fun experiences? That's an ordeal."

"What do you mean?"

"It's just not a time anyone really wants to be tied down, I guess. You miss out on all the fun. But Calum's a real catch, so you're the winner here."

You'd never thought about it before, really, but she was right. At least, she was right that it had been difficult and you hadn't really got the full university experience.

While Calum was out living his dream, you were busy making up with phone calls and long texts, leaving early from parties and never letting yourself look at another guy.

"He's not really been making many allowances for you, either," Y/F/N added. "He's part of a huge band, and I don't mean to offend but he has hundreds of girls throwing themselves at him every night. Who's to say he's not cheating?"

This wasn't the first time you'd been asked that question, and it normally merited quite a snappy answer. You had always been convinced of Calum's loyalty, but you were beginning to have second thoughts.

It wasn't like you could be with him all the time, like Crystal and Sierra were with Michael and Luke. You had things to do and a life to live, and you couldn't put it all on hold for him.

"Six years is a really long time to be in a relationship," you agreed quietly.

But you loved him.

Or did you?

It was hard to love someone you never got to see, someone who was changing so rapidly you barely even knew him anymore. The last time he visited, you felt like you were talking to a stranger.

"Valentine's Day is in a couple of weeks, he'll be here."

But would it be the same?

***
The next two weeks seemed to crawl by. You couldn't stop thinking about what your friend had said, and it was as though you began to realise how stifled you were by Calum.

There were so many missed opportunities, so many parts of life you couldn't experience to the fullest because of him.

And maybe you weren't even a good fit anymore.

The decision you made didn't come lightly, but you were sure it was the right one. Both of you needed a break from being contained in a relationship that wasn't working.

And though you greeted him with a welcome smile and a sweet sugar kiss, you could feel the strain between the two of you.

"I might get the lamb," Calum surveyed the menu carefully, chewing on his lip and not meeting your eye. "Or a salad."

"Hey! I've not dragged you to this fancy place for you to order salad."

Trying to keep up a playful demeanour was difficult when you were about to suggest an end to your six year relationship, but all the chirpy acting over late night calls had paid off.

"Y/N, there's something I've been meaning to say to you." Without any warning, Calum dropped the tone to a very serious one, and fixed an intense gaze on you.

Was he thinking the same as you?

"Me too. I know this isn't working."

All too late, you noticed the small velvet box in his hand, flipped open to show a shimmering diamond ring. You saw the quiver in his eye, the excited smile on his lips.

And you watched it disappear.

"You're breaking up with me?" He quickly slid the ring back into his jacket pocket, but you had already seen. "On Valentine's Day?"

"What?! No! Ple-"

"It's too late, Y/N," his tone became steely, his face morphing into a glare. "Forget it."

Your mouth was glued shut as he stormed away, leaving you loveless and in shock on the so-called day of love.
