A sharp whistle of wind passed the ear of Annie Wood as she sat in the centre of her twin sized bed, attempting to complete her homework. She was having a hard time focusing, and her mind had wandered to doodling aimlessly on the corner of her page.
The young girl, now sixteen, pulled her pencil away from the page. She had been having a reoccuring dream about being in the middle of the forest, and seeing a large tree that had a squirrel hole in the centre, and pink petalled flowers hanging delicately off the branches. Annie had drawn that tree, and knew that her dreams weren't just dreams. They had happened. Annie had been presented with this tree two years ago, while on a special island with a special boy.
Annie tried to push the memories of Neverland out of her mind, just as her room grew colder and the sheer curtains draped over her window blew violently in the wind. They were a sea of fabric that entangled themselves together, trying not to blow out into the night air.
All of a sudden, there was a loud bang and all activity in Annie's room stopped. The curtains blew peacefully, and the teenage girl could make out the sound of drunken voices and giggles coming from downstairs. She knew her mother was home with another man, one the woman wouldn't remember the name of tomorrow.
Annie's mother had been sober for a year once her daughter had returned from Neverland. However, after that year, she fell into the same old habits. Drinking and partying, and bringing strange men home nearly every night. Annie couldn't wait until she was eighteen, so she could move out and be on her own. Her mother had changed once, but Annie didn't expect it to happen again.
Annie sighed heavily as she heard a loud laugh, and went to close her bedroom door. As the girl turned around, she saw a black figure standing in front of her window, and gasped out in shock.
"I heard you missed Neverland, Annie." The figure spoke, and Annie knew exactly who this was. It was Peter Pan's shadow, who visited Annie those two years ago when she felt the same feelings; alone and unloved.
"I never said that, Pan." Annie shot back, denying the shadow just what it wanted to hear. Annie was on the right path with her life, and couldn't fly off to a mystical island again.
"You didn't have to say it, Annie. Peter knows how you truly feel." The shadow elevated into the air ever so slightly, before holding out it's translucent hand.
Annie knew that she wanted to return to Neverland again. It's the one place where she felt like she belonged the most, and still had some unfinished business with Peter Pan.
After blinking hard and sharply exhaling, Annie took the shadow's hand. The familiar feeling of floating through the air returned to the girl's body as the shadow pulled her out the window, and away from the house that she didn't call home.
Finally, after two years, Annie was heading home.
