Annie stared at the pale boy in front of her, with an expression of disbelief written across her face. Her eyebrows were knit together, and her mouth hung slightly open. The last words that Victor had said lingered in the air, repeating themselves in Annie's mind like a broken record.
"That's not possible." The girl finally said, trying to figure out how this person could be her brother. Besides the different eyes, and his masculine features, Annie could see the similarities. Same hair, same prominent cheekbones, same average sized lips. They both had the same dark bags under their eyes. It was possible after all, and Annie knew it. Her mother was known for sneaking around with multiple men, and maybe, one of her nights had turned into a child.
"If we can go sit somewhere, I can explain everything." Victor said, wanting Annie to believe him. The boy was calm, but his thick eyebrows were turned up ever so slightly.
"Who brought you here?" Annie asked, ignoring his suggestion. She wanted to know how he even got on the island in the first place, and how he knew her. Someone must've told him, and Annie had her suspicions.
"Please, I will tell you everything. Let's just go sit down." Victor repeated himself, earning a nod in response from Annie.
"Follow me." She said, turning to start walking down the dirt path, leading Victor through the jungle. Annie had a place in mind that was nearby. It only took the pair a few minutes to get there.
Annie had led Victor to the beach where Indigo resided under the water. The girl took a seat on the warm sand, parallel with the water. Victor sat down across from her, leaving a comfortable distance.
"Good?" Annie asked, wanting to make sure the location was suitable. They were far enough from the water that when the waves came up they wouldn't get wet, and far away from the dark jungle.
"Yeah, this is good. I suspect you come here often?" Victor asked, noticing how easy it was for Annie to find. He would've easily gotten lost in the jungle, since every tree and path looks pretty much the same.
Annie nodded, looking out at the water. "I'm friends with one of the mermaids." She replied.
"This place has mermaids?" Victor was enjoying the small talk, feeling as though he was having the opportunity to get to know his sister.
"This place is called Neverland. Now tell me how you got here." Annie changed the subject, looking back at the boy. She wasn't in the mood for small talk.
"He didn't tell me his name. He had blonde hair, and always had his hood up. And a scar down his face." Victor replied, describing who could only have been one person.
"Felix. So that's what he was up to." Annie mumbled. The eldest Lost boy had been missing for a few days now, and didn't even bother attending Grayson's funeral. "How did Felix find you?"
"How about I just tell you the whole story?" The boy suggested, raising an eyebrow at Annie. She nodded, giving him the opportunity to speak.
"I'm eighteen years old. We share a mother, but a different father. My parents got a divorce, and my father took custody over me when I was six months old because he didn't think our mother was capable of looking after a child. They had only been married for a year and a half, and accidentally got pregnant. After I was born our mother spiraled off the rails. She lost her job, and started going out all the time. Sometimes with her friends, sometimes alone. Either way, she'd always come home drunk. My father did the only thing he thought would give me a good life, and that was leave our mother and take me with him." Victor paused, giving Annie the chance to process what he was saying.
"This all sounds very familiar. At least you know who your father is. Mother never talked about him when I was a child. All I know is that he died after I was born. I don't know how." Annie stated, trying to keep her voice calm even though it was on the verge of breaking.
"Yeah. Mother of the year, I guess." Victor said sarcastically. "My eighteenth birthday was two months ago, and I knew you were out in the world somewhere. My father had a picture of you, that our mother sent him. I figured you'd be a teenager by down. I left my home, and tried to find you. It wasn't that difficult, all I had to do was look up where our mother was living. I broke into her house, hoping you lived with her. I found your bedroom, and a picture of you as a toddler on the bookshelf."
"Why did you run away?" Annie asked, feeling slightly confused. If the boy's father took him away to give him a better life, surely he would've tried his hardest to achieve that. There was the possibility of failure though, as there was in their mother.
Victor shrugged. "My father works all the time. He's hardly ever home, so I doubt he'll miss me." He replied. "Anyways, I knew I had the right house, but you weren't home. I assumed maybe you were out with our mother, and that she changed her ways to give you a good life. Just as I was about to leave, a book fell off the shelf. I didn't want you to think someone was in there so I went to put it back. But as soon as I picked it up, the window flew open. In came the boy I told you about. Felix." Victor finished his story, nervously anticipating Annie's reaction. She seemed to be taking the whole situation quite well, considering it wasn't the craziest thing to ever happen to her.
"What's your last name?" Annie asked, not sure why that was the first question that popped into her head. She had her mother's last name, Wood.
"Wood. It's the name I was born with, and my father gave me my first name." The boy said.
Annie nodded, looking down at the sand as she played with it. "That's my last name too."
