Even though Annie had been here before, she still had no idea how to navigate through the tall, nearly identical trees of Neverland. Peter seemed to know exactly where he was going as the two teenagers made their way to the lost boys camp.
Walking through the forest of Neverland meant thin scratches from the low tree branches, and nearly twisted ankles from rocks and tree roots that were littered throughout the pathes. A branch had scratched Annie on her upper forearm, that stung from the cool air around her.
Eventually, there was a break in the trees and seven dark green tents put together with canvas and tree branches made a semi circle at the edge of the clearing. In the middle of the clearing was the familiar firepit and log benches that Annie had grown so fond of while she was on Neverland the first time.
Sitting on the logs were six boys, half of them Annie didn't recognize. The ones she did recognize, Jakob and Felix, both jumped to their feet with large grins.
"Is it really you, Annie?" Jakob asked, walking over to the girl. The attention of the other three lost boys had been caught, but one still had his back to Annie as he sat on the log, whittling a short branch.
"Yes, it's me." Annie replied as Jakob pulled her in for a hug, his now increasingly longer hair brushing against the side of her face. "Your hair got longer." Annie pointed out as Jakob pulled away. The black locks of the boy were down to his chin, and were slightly wavey.
"And you got older. A lot has changed." Jakob grinned at the girl. Felix then embraced Annie in a short lasting hug before saying his greeting.
"What are you doing back here?" The boy asked. He also looked the exact same as he did last time Annie saw him.
"I realized that the only place I need to be is here. My mother went back to her old ways, so I guess I'm officially a lost girl." Annie exclaimed, smiling anxiously. The last thing she wanted was pity from her old friends.
"Alright, you've still got a few people to meet." Peter interjected. "Boys, get over here."
The three newest additions to the island made their way over to Annie. One was tall, but looked younger than all the rest. He had dirty blonde hair that fell into his brown eyes. The second one had a face that looked like a starry night sky—completely littered with freckles. His hair was short and curly. The last boy had strong facial features, and Annie assumed he was the oldest. He had warm eyes that looked like melted dark chocolate.
"This is Nathan, Miles, and Troye." Peter pointed to each boy individually as the formed a horizontal line in front of Annie. The youngest, Nathan, nervously fiddled with his hands as he smiled. Miles was the freckly one who said a soft 'hello.' Troye stood at the end, and simply smiled widely in greeting.
"Nice to meet you all." Annie told the boys, before turning back to Peter. "Who's that?" She asked, pointing to the boy that still had his back to the rest of the children. He had dropped his stick, and was currently shoving his knife back into the side pocket of his tanned cargo pants.
"That's someone you're probably very excited to see." Peter replied just as the boy stood up. He pulled his pants up and adjusted his shirt before turning around, a half smirk on his face.
"Grayson." Annie said quietly before walking over to the boy, and pulling him in for a hug. Even though it's been two years, Annie felt like it was yesterday when she last saw her best friend.
"Welcome back." Grayson mumbled, a grin spreading across his plump lips.
"Welcome back? What are you doing here?" Annie pulled away, but still held onto the boy's forearms. She could feel how muscular he's gotten, and his skin was warm under her hands.
"I knew I'd always be a lost boy if I didn't have my brother with me in the real world. It's a long story, maybe I'll tell it to you on a rainy day?" Grayson stated, winking at the end.
"You and I both know it only rains here for one reason." Annie pointed out, letting go of the boy's arms.
"Maybe a sunny day then." Grayson shrugged, chuckling softly. Annie nodded, and turned back to Peter.
"Where's Tanner and Hunter?" She asked, realizing her other best friend and his brother weren't present at the reunion.
"They found happiness, Annie. Hunter and Tanner never were fully lost because they had each other, so I sent them home. Hunter found a loving foster family, and Tanner, well, Tanner found love. He's been sending me messages in a bottle for a few months now, and him and his boyfriend are getting married soon." Peter explained. Annie's heart swelled with happiness for the two boys. They had been so kind towards her when she was on Neverland the first time, so they deserved nothing but happiness.
"That's good. That's really good. I'll have to send Tanner a bottle message." Annie told Peter, who nodded.
"We can arrange that." He replied. "Now come on, your tent has been waiting for you for two years now. Go get changed into some...better clothes." Peter pointed to the tent in the semi circle that had been Annie's when she was here, and had briefly shared with Wendy Darling.
Annie realized she was still in her pyjamas, and wanted to make her arrival on Neverland official by changing into the signature clothing of the island.
