For a moment, I'm completely paralyzed. My father just witnessed my boyfriend beating the crap out of me. I can't look him in the eyes. I can't see the disappointment.
Matt is trying to get out of the room, but my father blocks his way.
"Don't you even think about it!" Dad sneers at my boyfriend. Matt immediately jumps back in surprise. Every part of his body shows he's scared. I don't blame him, I would be too. It rarely happens, but when my father is mad, he's really mad.
Right now, my father is furious.
Tears are streaming down my face and I have to keep myself from sobbing. I have to get out of here. I can't be here any longer. I stand up from the ground, still in the corner where Matt locked me in. My father is still staring Matt down, but I can see Matt noticing my movements. I stumble out of the door mumbling that I have to go. My father throws me a glance, but he doesn't stop me.
Lucky me.
Oh no, forget that.
Kevin and Liv are both walking down the hallway. Obviously, towards my room. When they see me their eyes immediately light up, but that soon fades when they see the state I'm in.
"Kai, are you alright?" Kevin asks with a lot of concern in his voice. The concern is also visible on his face, but I don't answer him. I run right past him, our shoulders bumping on the way.
"Kailee?" He yells after me, but I ignore him. I run down the stairs and out of the house. It doesn't go gracefully because my whole body is still weak, but I do not forget to slam the door on the way.
I run to the only place I can feel myself. The only thing that always seems to calm me down, besides music of course. I run to the beach. There's this little place nobody knows about.
On the edge of the stone and sand, I take off my shoes. I step into the sand with my bare feet feeling the soft sand around my feet. Immediately I calm down a little and that only intensifies when I take a deep breath taking in the deep salty smell of the sea. I walk towards the place I usually sit down and just listen to the waves.
I've never actually shared this place with anyone. I came here first when I was a little kid and ever since then, I've been coming here every time I needed to escape. Just like now.
---
I sit there staring into nothingness when I hear someone walk up to me. A confused feeling rushes through me. In all my years, nobody has ever come to this part of the beach. It's just not a place people go to.
"Kailee," I hear that someone softly say. Their voice sounds like a mixture of hurt and disappointment. I don't even have to look up to see who's standing there. Not even when the person sits down I look their way. The disappointment in their voice is enough to make me afraid of looking at them.
"Why didn't you tell me?" He asks me. "You know you can tell me anything right?" He adds when I don't respond. The hurt is so obvious in his voice. My heart breaks a little at his tone.
"I didn't think I could," I whisper finally speaking up.
"Lee Lee, why do you think I'm here?" he asks me. "Because my parents asked you to?" I ask him more than I question. "No Lee Lee! I'm here because I want to. When Kevin told me what had happened and that you had left, I immediately went to search for you," he tells me softly taking my hand.
For some weird reason, my heart goes haywire at that little touch. It gives me the courage to look at the boy beside me. Only to find him already looking at me. He doesn't wear a look of disappointment or hurt. It's a genuine look. A genuine look that tells me he cares and that he's worried.
