Hearing You Say "I Love You"

"Ate, may naghahanap sayo sa labas."

Samantha looked by the door of her room when she heard her sister, Angela.

"Sino daw?" She looked hesitant to answer. "Kung si Romeo, sabihin mo, bukas papasok na ako."

"Hindi, Ate."

"Sino?"

She was answered by the man who stood behind Angela.

"Hey." Napatayo sya mula sa kanyang pagkakahiga nang makita si Samuelson. When Angela stepped aside, she saw him holding a bouquet of red roses. "Flowers?"

Samantha stared at him for a few good seconds before forcing herself to fake a smile.

"Babalik na ako sa salas, Ate," said Angela as she left them like what she said. Awkward silence surrounded them immediately.

"Kumain ka na?" asked Samuelson to break the silence, which answered by Samantha with a nod. "Oh. Then, how about a roadtrip?"

Napakunot noo ang dalaga. "Roadtrip?"

"Dala ko yung motor," he said with a smile.

"Uhm... sina Nanay?"

"Naipagpaalam na kita. I have their permission." Samantha was about to make excuses because she's in no mood to be out of the house, when Samuelson talked. "I'll give you time to prepare. Hihintayin na lang kita sa labas."

Pumasok saglit si Samuelson para ipatong ang dalang mga bulaklak sa lamesa pagkatapos ay lumabas ulit.

"Don't take too long, okay?" He jokingly asked then gently closed the door and left.

Napabuntong hininga naman si Samantha. She has no choice. Kailangan nyang sumama kay Samuelson. Maybe she needs the night air, too. Wala na kasi syang ibang ginawa kundi ang magkulong sa kanyang kwarto.

Like what Samuelson asked, she dressed herself up pretty quickly. Lumabas na rin sya agad pagkatapos. She saw him sitting on his big bike, looking absent-mindedly down to the ground. He doesn't seem excited about their roadtrip. Usually naman, kapag lumalabas sila, excited ito. The moon behind him and the light from the lightpost touching his side profile made him look like he lost a really important battle.

Nang lapitan nya ito, nag-angat ito ng tingin sa kanya. Upon seeing her, he stood up and smiled. She doesn't know why it was somewhat off.

"Tara?" He asked then handed her the spare helmet. Napakunot noo siya nang hindi iyon agad kunin ng dalaga. "Is something wrong?"

Her eyes was etched with worry when she asked, "Okay ka lang?"

The mere question triggered something in him he didn't want to be triggered.

He forced a smile. "Oo naman. Ayos lang ako. Bakit mo natanong?"

Nakipaglaban ng titigan si Samantha sa binata, tinitingnan kung nagsasabi ito ng totoo. But he had his guards up. She then sighed.

"Wala. Imahinasyon ko lang siguro."

She took the helmet from him and wore it. Pagkasakay niya at pagkakapit sa binata, pinaandar na nito ang motor.

Pamilyar kay Samantha ang daan na tinatahak nila kaya hinayaan na lamang niya si Samuelson na dalhin sya kung saan man sa lugar na iyon. Puro puno ng Acacia ang nasa magkabilang-gilid ng kalsada kaya presko ang hangin. Idagdag pa ang simoy ng hangin sa gabi. Buti na lang at naisipan niyang magjacket. She actually enjoyed the ride.
