ADHIRA KHATRI didn't sign up to be an Avenger. After getting back from Afghanistan, she joined S.H.I.E.L.D. after her former supervisor encouraged her to do so and gave her a number to a friend of his in the agency. Adhira settled into the agency very quickly, becoming a well-ranked field agent within a short number of years.
It was comforting to her. Following orders by people ranked above her. According to her previous therapist, that was something she would have to work on, because she was no longer in Afghanistan, and she could make her own decisions.
When Nick Fury wanted her for the Avengers Initiative, she followed orders, once again. After the Battle of New York, Adhira invested herself more into being a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, while still being an Avenger.
After the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. when Hydra revealed itself within the ranks, Adhira felt like part of her had fallen with S.H.I.E.L.D. that day. But, when S.H.I.E.L.D. began to reform, Adhira made a decision for herself; she wasn't going to go back, even when Nick Fury himself asked her. She wanted to go back, but this was a vital step in her life, a step towards showing she wasn't a person to be ordered around anymore.
When the war in Sokovia happened, Adhira took a hard hit, both mentally and physically. She blamed herself for not being able to save everyone and save Pietro, she blamed herself for not getting to Pietro in time, because if she had just been seconds faster she would have saved him.
Whether she liked it or not, she was alive and kicking after Sokovia. She had to go to physical therapy three times a week for her leg that had been shot twice, and therapy after an incident at the compound during dinner, but she felt like her life might be starting to get back on track for once.
Then new recruits came. While Tony and Clint resigned, Thor went offworld, and Bruce was missing, the Avengers turned over a new leaf, Adhira at the front of the pack.
When Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff's friend, Sam Wilson, joined, Adhira quickly recognized him as the man who helped her several times at the VA years before when she put effort into treating her PTSD. Sam remembered her, mostly due to him not being able to forget helping an Avenger, but also due to Natasha and Steve frequently talking about her.
Somehow, Adhira and Sam became quick friends. He was easy to talk to, meaning when Adhira's thoughts got too loud, Sam understood, and the two would take and share even if it was late at night.
Adhira hadn't had a stable relationship, or even liked someone, since Brock Rumlow two years ago. She didn't know how to even state that she thought Sam was unique and that she apprectiated greatly how he listened to her and genuinelly cared about her input.
But Adhira was willing to try something new if Sam was, because lately, Adhira had been doing many things she wouldn't have considered even a year ago.

→ don't write out her ptsd or i'm taking the plot back. her ptsd is a big part of her character, of course her ptsd doesn't define her, but it does halt some of her decisions.
→ adhira doesn't like decisions. that's part of her character that can't be changed. she entered the army when she was eighteen and stayed in for a long time, and she just got used to people telling her what to do. years later, she still has trouble making basic decisions.
→ another big part of her character is she doesn't know what she's gonna do in life, like a lot of the avengers. she just knows she follows orders and fights things, so the idea of getting a job in accounting just doesn't seem right, the only thing that fits is doing something like this.
→ she and sam are quick friends. that's just their thing, they click for some reason. neither tries too hard or has dry humor, they just click, if that makes sense?
→ adhira did date brock rumlow. they were in a relationship for four years, and adhira thought it was getting serious, but then he turned out to be working for hydra. he actually did love her (she loved him), but it doesn't matter, because of what he's done and will do. it's hard for her to trust and want a relationship with someone, and she hasn't tried to have one since. so, when sam comes along, she's new to the dating scene again. this is important!
