IOWA BARNES had lived in Camp Half-Blood since she was ten, when a satyr befriended her at school when she arrived at her new foster home and brought her to the haven of demigods. Ever since, she had stayed there, year-round, like few of the campers did.
Her experience at Camp Half-Blood hadn't been as picture perfect as most campers. Her father was Deimos, a minor god disliked amongst the camp for the sole reason one of his domains was fear. For six years, she had stayed in the Hermes cabin despite the fact that she was claimed, and part of her ached for the time Luke--her brother in everything but blood--asked her to flee camp with him. If she had known nothing would change, she would have spared herself.
She felt so lost in a world that made it clear she wasn't wanted that she turned to the hunters of Artemis. She didn't know what to do, but she needed to do something to feel important. Zoë promised if she joined, she'd find a family in them, and she would never feel alienated from the world. It was what she craved—to belong—and when the hunters of Artemis came following Annabeth Chase's supposed death, Iowa couldn't help but follow Zoë, especially after her father was mentioned by the Oracle.
Iowa didn't fit in with Camp Half-Blood, Olympus, or the world itself. Maybe that was her curse, to roam the world looking for a place to belong until her death.
Or maybe the curse was her bone-deep insecurity that she was the one to ruin her place in the world. Eventually, Iowa Barnes would find out what her curse was, and not even the gods could help her then.
