MARIANNA HALLORANN had the Shine. She'd never known her father, a man who also had it, but her mother knew about it, and even had a bit herself.
But ever since she was young enough to understand it, her mother told her how special she was. That she had enough shine to light up the world like a star, that she was special.
Marianna, however, didn't think it was that special. For years, she'd been tortured by the things from the Overlook Hotel, the place her father died before she was born. Only she could see them, a "gift" of the shine.
How was seeing the things that murdered her father a "gift"?
Apparently, it was, and she was supposed to like the gift she was given from birth. Eventually, she started to no longer fear the things, she would stare back at them and declare that she was not scared and she would not be their prey any longer.
Then things changed. At thirteen years old, they came back, faster than ever. Except it wasn't them, it was It. The great evil that lived in the town, the thing her mother feared because she could see it.
Marianna was not scared of these things, and she wouldn't be scared of It, either. But It was much, much crueler than those things were.
She was that key piece in the puzzle, the thing that would shatter it and send little cardboard pieces splintering out into the universe.
Except Marianna didn't know how she was that piece or how she was supposed to harness the Shine.

EXTRA.
→ this is connected to the shining! dick hallorann, the cook, is mari's father. he died before she was born in the explosion of the overlook hotel. this DOES go by the book, but in this, he dies instead of living with danny & wendy. (i'd suggest you read the book, or read up on "the shine" to understand what it is.)
→ marianna is afro-latina! for her it 2 face claim (when i was going to write her), i chose rosario dawson or tessa thomspon. but it's impossible to find an under-eighteen afro-latina face claim. but if you can, please do! (also: her mother has to be latina, i personally used andrea navedo.)
→ this kinda ties into the books like how dick was at the fire (which, in the books was not how it is in the movies). dick was best friend's with mike's parents, but then he went into the military and to the overlook and mike's parents got onto drugs, and their friendship dwindled. which left mike and mari as "kinda-friends" as they call it, it's that "our parents were friends so we have to be, too" thing.
→ the shine is the thing to defeat pennywise, in this, but mari is too young to understand how to do it, so if you go to it 2, she'd understand then. the shine makes you see things that others can't, like spirits, etc. mari has been seeing them all her life to the point she's no longer scared of them, meaning she doesn't fear pennywise to the point it can kill him. because while the losers went up against him, they did still fear him, but mari can't find a bone in her body to do so.
→ also: bill & beverly have a bit of the shine! beverly a lot more than bill, though. they don't know, but mari does. (mari has a large amount of it, more than danny in the shining)
