CARMEN REYES was one of the popular kids in West Ham, but that didn't mean she wasn't a complete conspiracy nut. Not insanely so, but just the right amount, where in sixth grade when they learned about the moon landing she discredited every fact in her head.
However, no one knew she was a complete conspiracy nut, besides her best friend, Grizz Visser, or else that hard-work for popularity would go right down the drain. As a known foster kid in a town of very privileged children, it was hard to get incredibly popular—and Carmen was determined to never let the fact that she once bounced around foster homes destroy that again.
When the school starts the sign-up sheet for students who want to go to the Smoky Mountains, Carmen didn't want to go at all. She had basketball to practice for, how else would she secure her spot on the team? But, Grizz convinced her a little relaxation might help, and Carmen signed up for the field trip.
Mysteriously, on the ride there, she fell asleep. Carmen never took naps, especially in cars, so by the time she woke up, she was very confused. But she brushed it off as her staying up too late shooting hoops, and that there was nothing more to it.
Then the bus came back to West Ham, reporting that there was a storm, and peeled off. No parents waiting, no bus drivers getting out. It made absolutely no sense. Carmen's mother had trouble letting her stay home alone, she certainly wouldn't let her come home with no one waiting—and certainly not vanish without so much as a note or text.
Carmen now hated her conspiracy theorist brain, because she quickly realized how things didn't add up. They could call and text, but no internet, or television? They were somehow stuck in a town with no exit routes, yet they still had electricity and running water?
Carmen could deal with the fact they were somehow cut off from the world, but not that they were still connected to something that powered the town. Plus, she had watched enough shows and had common sense—this was Lord of the Flies, they wouldn't last unless there was order.
Allie and Cassandra Pressman shared the belief of order, but hadn't even considered the fact that they were still connected to something greater—like a plastic seal held them back from their world, but things still filtered through.
Carmen was in some apocalyptic world with a bunch of teenage idiots, to hell with the "no conspiracy" mindset—she was going to get answers.
