ZAYLYNN "ZAY" MADAIN was known for a lot of things, depending on who you asked. A wacky name, the future starlet of a famous mother, potential threat to society—the only daughter of Dionysus in hundreds of years, one of the last two "Wine Kids" standing.
After the Titan war, losing her brother Castor, nearly dying herself, and keeping Pollux from the edge of death, Zay had reached her breaking point. In a split-second lack of judgement, she decided to drive her mother's car to clear her head, ending up in her crashing into the side of a gas station, landing her in the Wilderness School.
She didn't want to be there, but she had no choice. At least she landed in there with Piper Mclean, a close friend from childhood she hadn't seen since the Titan War, and Leo Valdez, a witty runaway teen.
Zay and Piper were almost dating, on the cusp of it, and Zay felt like she was floating amongst the clouds. The pretty girl she'd had a crush on when she was younger liked her back, and on top of that, Piper understood more than anyone else.
Then, after a brief nap to the Grand Canyon on Piper's shoulder, Zay awoke to a world where Piper Mclean was dating Jason Grace, and their trio was now a quartet. A world that seemed entirely normal, as if the the hour before she and Piper hadn't both been planning to ask the other out while they stood on the sky-walk.
But, still, feelings lingered for the girl with choppy hair, and things didn't make sense for Zay. It was as if those memories had been placed in her head, shoved like a puzzle piece that didn't fit. Because she saw the gaps in her mind, saw through the mist-like thing that invaded her.
In the end, the truth came out, and Zay's world was shattered. Because now her two worlds had come crashing together, shattering the glass in between, and deep down she knew it would never be put back together.

→ Zay is a daughter of Dionysus, the god of madness, which is the only reason she can see through Hera's Mist. Because of that, she knows something is off with the entire situation. (Also: she can easily control the Mist because of her father.)
→ Her entire life, she had two lives. The one with her mother, where she would sparsely act and could live entirely different, and the one at CHB, where everything was somehow a nightmare but entirely perfect. That was what she looked forward to, going home and living normally. Except when Piper and Leo come to CHB, it feels like there isn't a line between the two, because Piper had been that "normal" thing in her life.
→ The reason Zay crashed her mother's car was because she had a PTSD episode in the car, and swerved through oncoming traffic and crashed into the side of the gas station. Zay couldn't use that defense, so she took the "troubled, uncontrollable celebrity kid" look and took the time at the Wilderness School.
