DIA HILL was one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s best agents. She didn't want to brag, but if she was, she'd say she was a damn good agent and didn't fail a single mission.
But when she got paired with America's Golden Boy, she was considering nosediving off a cliff. Steve Rogers was not her ideal partner—she didn't even do partners. Much less with him, who had broken her nose months before, tainting her nose with a permanent crook.
Rationally, she knew it wasn't his fault that the STRIKE team fell apart, or that they all worked for Hydra and were scumbags who lied to her face for six years. That still didn't stop her bitterness towards him, but to be fair, she was bitter to everyone.
When Dia found out from her sorta-sister that she would have to act like Steve Rogers' wife on top of it, she almost stabbed herself. Out of all people, him? On top of that, she'd have to act like a loving wife—she played many parts, but the part of a person in a healthy, loving relationship? Not her thing.
After the strange few-month long mission, Dia returned to her apartment, ready to take a long, cold shower and forget that Steve Rogers ever existed and that she'd had to kiss his stupid, stoic face.
And then she found out they were legally married.

→ dia is maria's half sister! their mother had maria first, and while she split from maria's father, met dia's father. their mother had dia with a man she dated for two years, before they broke up and their mother married maria's father. it drove a wedge between the entirety of them, not just dia and maria, due to the tension and dsyfunctionality of it all. dia never liked maria, but with age she started to like her more, but never a buddy-buddy relationship.
→ dia was part of the STRIKE team, which is a reason why she doesn't like steve. she thought they all liked her, but she found out they'd been lying the entire time. steve happened to punch her in the face, breaking her nose, when he thought she was an enemy of s.h.i.e.l.d.
→ the reason that they're legally married is because s.h.i.e.l.d. wanted it to look official in case the people they were targeting were dangerous and it was highly possible they would check it out. they, however, changed legal records online and made it where they were married, and couldn't figure out how to undo it after the records wouldn't revert back to their original state
