Sleep was strangely peaceful that night even though I had the stress of packing and moving, the fears and nervousness of a new job looming over me, and the fact I had seen Loki. When I woke up to my grandparent's bickering over who had to wake me up, I was surprised that no dreams, bad or not, had haunted me during the night. I had thought about him long into the night until I had finally drifted off, trying to understand what had happened, but now I had to put my wonderings about that aside. I had a busy day ahead of me. It was moving day after all. Getting up, I quickly changed from my pajamas into a pair of pale jean shorts and a beige V-neck t-shirt with turquoise, orange, and red dragonflies printed on the front. Before leaving the room and heading down for a continental breakfast, I wrapped my weak ankle in gauze to give it some support before tying on my pair of turquoise convers.
After breakfast where my grandmother had French braided my blonde hair while waiting for the staff to make a new pot of decaf coffee, the three of us made our way to my old apartment where we met with a moving company that we were renting a small moving truck from. Upon leading the two, burly moving men into the apartment I found a sticky note Renee had left for me saying she had last minute plans to go to breakfast with her boyfriend and that she was sad that she'd miss me leaving today. Rolling my eyes I tossed the yellow note into the trash. Typical Renee, not even a proper goodbye. With the help of the mover men, it took us only about an hour to pack all my things into the truck that was now decently stuffed with cardboard boxes and furniture. Thanking them I took one more walk through to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything that belonged to me. It was strange seeing this apartment I had spent about two years in looking so empty with only Renee's things left, but with a sigh I locked the door and went down to the lobby to turn in my key.
Grumps insisted on driving the five hours from my old apartment in Manhattan to my new one in D.C. just as he had on the much longer trip from Muskegon to Manhattan. He kept insisting that my grandmother driving made him too nervous. We arrived at my new building at around three in the afternoon. It took only a few minutes to sign the final papers and receive my key, and boom, I had a new apartment! Grams insisted that I take her straight up to see it in real life. I had decided on the taking the apartment on the third floor so that I could get the view of the park in the distance. From the light scent of Lysol and carpet cleaners I could tell that the apartment had been given a final clean before moving day. The two of us were just throwing open the windows to let in some fresh air when Grumps knocked at the door.
"Wasn't U-Haul sending some more boys here to help us?" he questioned, glancing around the living room with an approving expression.
"Yeah." I pulled my cell from my pocket and started dialing the company's number. "After hitting that traffic halfway through Pennsylvania, I was sure they'd be here before us."
The U-Haul employee that answered my call figured out that they had accidentally sent the movers that were to help us to the wrong location, which happened to be way outside the city. "I'll call them and get them the right address, but it'll be at least an hour until they get there. I'm sorry for the inconvenience."
"That's fine. We'll be here when they arrive." I said before hanging up.
Upon explaining the situation to my grandparents, we decided to start moving things ourselves. Grumps seemed to be under the impression he could carry anything, though we both knew that age was starting its work on him and he wasn't the young man he once was. Grams, on the other hand, had gone through foot surgeries over the last three years and she had one scheduled in six months for her knee which had been giving her trouble, so she couldn't handle carrying the extra weight. Then there was me with a bummed out ankle. My grandmother set about giving the apartment another clean down even though the building had already done one. She wiped down walls and windows, vacuumed the carpeted rooms, sanitized counters and the bathrooms, keeping herself busy in these tasks while Grumps and I started moving boxes from the truck into their respective rooms.
