Chapter Twenty-Three
The snow covered the ground as I found a place to hide until it stopped. A fire roared in the background keeping the place lit and warm. A figure appeared through the snow and entered the small cabin that I was in.
"You're back sooner then I expected." I mumbled, tearing my eyes from the snow outside and to Edward who returned. "I figured you'd actually keep your word and ditch me."
He rolled his eyes before shaking the snow off of him.
"I rather not listen to my family call me cold-hearted. They wouldn't be able to forgive me for some time if they learned I left you alone today of all days." He grumbled, annoyed that he was still stuck with me.
I lend against the wall, my brushing a piece of hair out of my face.
"Thank you." The blood rushed to my cheeks as cleared my throat. "I, um." The words failed me as I didn't know how to get out of the uncomfortable situation.
Edward chuckled, finding me amusing.
I rolled my eyes at him and looked towards my hands.
I was thankful that he didn't leave and that he seemed to think that his family would be upset if he abandoned me today of all days. Things seemed to have gotten awkward between us since November and my slight confession.
He approached me making little noise against the hard wooden floor. I glanced up when his feet stopped in view, my chest tightening as he was closer then I first thought. His golden eyes still glowed brightly from his recent hunting trip a few days back.
I saw the movement, his shoulder lifting his arm, and felt as my lungs stopped working. Freezing I wondered what he planned on doing before I was broken out of my haze as he dangled a phone in my face. My face flashed red in embarrassment as I snatched the deceive from him.
Edwards laughter filled the cabin as he moved away from me. I sent him a disapproving glare, unpleased with his actions and the embarrassment that I felt because of it.
Flipping the phone open I dialed the number I memorized the second he got it. I listened to the rings waiting patiently for him to pick up like he always would on the holidays. It was routine for me to call my siblings on a holiday even if I hadn't talked but that one day each year.
Just like it was a routine for me to call, it was a routine for them to answer. To listen to whatever words left my mouth. But as no one picked up and the phone continued to ring I couldn't help but doubt Elijah would follow this routine.
Another ring. Another silence. Another ring.
He still wasn't picking up.
Another ring and then a click. I grinned, thinking that he had picked up at last only to be disappointed when it turned out that it was just his answering mechanic. He hadn't picked up like I had hopped.
Disappointment laced my voice as I left my brother a short message and quickly hanging up. Not feeling like having a conversation with Edward until I had to I dialed the next person on my list of holiday greetings.
Alice picked up quickly, wishing me a Merry Christmas unlike her fair brother that was actually in the same room as me. We fall into a easy and light conversation about the snowy weather I was having and the sun that that she was having. I told her about the gifts I had collected for everyone - all expect for hers - and that I couldn't wait to see what they thought of them.
Alice pouted, wanting to know what I had gotten her. I teased her but didn't give in.
She was half way across the world and there was nothing she could do about it.
Edward faked interest in the book that he was reading but I knew that he was dying to leave and begin his man hunt again. I even told Alice as much, causing the male mind reader to glare at me and me to forge innocence.
He wasn't the only one that could play a mind game.
