Hi! People seemed confused about how only one of Virgil's Marks was black when they both realized their feelings. I apologize for making it confusing-in chapter 19, when Virgil realized, Logan had not yet accepted his feelings. Chapter 19 was set earlier in the day, and Logan realized his feelings later that night. Again, sorry for the confusion, and I hope that explained it!
A knock at the door startled Virgil, jumping and glancing to the clock. It was around the time school ended for the day, and Virgil winced. Hoping it wasn't who he thought it might be he ignored the knock, going back to scrolling through his tumblr instead. Hopefully whoever it was would just go away. However, only a few seconds later the knock returned, louder than before.
Virgil frowned, looking to the door and wondering whether he should answer it or not. He already knew who it probably was. Maybe not the exact person, but it had to be one of his friends. Virgil wanted to know which one it was, but at the same time he knew it was going to hurt. Whoever it was, he couldn't be with them. No matter what. Both of them already had someone.
Virgil tugged on the sleeves of his hoodie-his old black one, as he accidentally left the other with Logan-and started making his way to the door. He hadn't seen the mark again since he first found out one was black. He had just thrown on his hoodie and tried his best to ignore it. Now though, it was clear he wasn't going to be able to ignore it. Whoever it was outside his door wouldn't let him.
Hand on the handle of the door, he heard another knock. Sighing in frustration he quickly pulled the door open, only letting his face show through the small opening. "What do you wan-"
Virgil cut himself off, finding himself face to face with not just one of his friends, but both of them. He certainly felt confused, but he chose to ignore it. Maybe he wouldn't have to face whoever it was that loved him back just yet. Maybe they wouldn't come to him about it at all. Swallowing down his nerves, Virgil opened the door a little wider, and tried again.
"Oh. It's... both of you." He looked from one to the other, once again wishing he knew who it was. "What... what are you both doing here?"
"You... don't know?" Patton asked, looking confused. He shared a glance with Logan before looking back to Virgil, frowning. "We thought you would've already noticed..."
"Noticed what?" Virgil questioned. "What are you talking about?"
"The tallies." Logan answered. Virgil swore his heart stopped beating at that moment.
"Tallies? What tallies? I don't know anything about any tallies." Virgil winced at his own awful lie, crossing his arms defensively.
"Virgil..." Patton reached out to Virgil, who took a step back. He felt guilty when he saw the way Patton's face fell, and sighed. He glared at the floor for a few moments, gaze softening slowly as he looked back up at them.
"I... I'm sorry, okay?" He mumbled, feeling tears in his eyes for the thousandth time that day. "I don't... I don't know how to react. Wh-why do you both know about it anyways?"
"What do you mean? Why wouldn't both of us know?" Logan wondered.
"Well... only one of them is black. So, who is it? And how are you both just... fine with it?" Virgil asked. He watched Logan and Patton share another look, feeling slightly angry that they kept doing that. Why couldn't they just explain things and get it over with? Nothing was coming out of this anyways.
"Virgil, what time did you get your marks?" Logan looked back to him, and he shrugged.
"I dunno. A little while after I... ran out on you guys," his voice got softer at the end of his sentence, and he sighed. "Sorry."
